Editor's Notes and Comments:
Description:
A contemporary New York comedy about Isabella 'Izzy' Grossman, a single independent woman who is caught in a romantic quandary when her grandmother hires a Jewish matchmaker to find her a husband.
Amazon.com:
A sweet tempered urban love story, Crossing Delancey argues that true love may be in the very first place you look. Amy Irving is a single Jewish woman working at an upscale bookstore on the Upper West Side of New York. As much as she longs to be a part of the intellectual literary scene, she is tethered to her roots on the Lower East Side, where her old-fashioned grandmother is forever trying to fix her up. Irving has her eye on a handsome brooding author, but her grandmother enlists the help of a local matchmaker to fix her up with Peter Riegert, a quiet Jewish man who runs a pickle stand in the neighborhood. Soon she must decide what it is she really wants out of life and what love really means to her. Though a very traditional love story, Crossing Delancey has its moments of soul searching drama and an unlikely romance. --Robert Lane

This movie is one of my "feel good" movies. As many times as I have seen it, I wanted to be able to watch it whenever I wanted to rather than waiting to see it on tv. I like the characters, especially the grandmother. What makes it especially nice, too, is how easy it is to order on Amazon.com; however, I have a suggestion. I can not always get information, like a synopsis of a movie or book, before I make my purchase. All in all, this was one purchase that I know I will always enjoy.

Crossing Delancey has been a favorite movie of mine for some time. I needed to replace my old VHS copy. It is a very colorful love story that
makes a statement on looking beyond the surface. Amy Irving plays a young
Jewish woman whose bubby (grandma) hires a matchmaker for her. She has
her eye on a good-looking, suave writer, but the man who wants to know her
better is a pickle salesman. It's not only funny, but says alot about the
importance of family and friends to keep us healthy and happy. The older
woman who plays Bubby is just wonderfully hilarious.

This is one of a handful of movies I've watched more than once. The two main reasons for this are probably that Izzy works in a bookstore, and Peter Reigert. The very first time I watched it, I wanted to be Izzy--but a much better, smarter Izzy, who made much better choices about men (unlike the real me, who made choices like Izzy, of course). The characters and the New York atmosphere is great. Wardrobe, very '80s, but a lovely romance, just the same.If you are a fellow lover of bookstores or books, please check out my blog at today.com (allthepage).

A charming, unpretentious little gem, which is even better if you know New York City. Don't expect the comedic heights of classics like Bringing Up Baby or Adam's Rib, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Fun soundtrack. Just enjoy.

This movie has aged very well. It satisfies the uncynical need in most us to believe that love and romance can exist in every life-even that of a pickle man. Good character, true feeling, and commitment are rewarded as Sam (Peter Riegert) wins the love of Isabella (Amy Irving) with the help of Bubbie. Enjoy!!
