DON'T BE FOOLED!
The promise is that this scheme will result in the popular election of the president and VP. Baloney!
This is no "democratic reform." Once enough states join together to control 270 electoral votes, all the campaign money spent, and all the political promises and favors given, will go to them. That is what this is about.
Suppose a dozen states join the "compact" (or conspiracy) to give their 270+ electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote in the US. Outside that group (or gang of 12) all the primaries and caucuses of the outsider states will become meaningless. Only the voters in that group of a dozen will be important to the candidates. That dozen will become the new "battleground."
This scheme is the brain child of a lottery inventor. Its purpose is to win money and power for the few states that join in the agreement. Far from being "democratic," this hair-brained scheme could render 38 states irrelevant in presidential politics. Shame on the newspapers that endorsed this tricky scheme. Insted of protecting the public interest, they were, once again, asleep at the guard house. The US doesn't need another elite power grab. We need real reform, like that specified in The New Election Game, here on Amazon.

Great discusion of the background of the Electoral College, and the pros and cons of changing it. While the Popular Vote initiative might work, it has limitations, but the advancement of this concept may create momentum to finally pass a Constitutional amendment to abandon the obsolete Electoral College system in favor of direct election of the President by the people, with every vote counting equally for the very first time.
