For me, getting this book was better than getting a gym membership.

There were three big barriers for me to physical fitness: a lack of time; a lack of motivation; boredom with exercise. I HATE running. Driving to the gym to work out seems like it takes too much time.

This book helped me overcome those mental and physical barriers and right now I'm probably the best shape I've ever been in my entire life short of Army basic training and AIT (although in Army basic training I spent much more time getting into shape). It helped me understand just what I was trying to accomplish with exercise.

The biggest change for me has been in the warm-up. Before I undertook this book I never thought I had time for a warm-up. Now I don't miss warm ups. Truly they help the body prepare for the jolt to the system that exercise is. Another reviewer said the passage on breathing in this book is worth the price of the book by itself - I'd agree with that. Knowing an effective warm-up, knowing how you're not wasting your time with a warm-up, knowing the components of physical fitness goes a long way toward solving the motivation issue.

There are so many different exercises in this book all targeting different areas. You can put them together for an effective, individualized plan. Last week I was feeling some mild soreness in my back. I used the back exercises in this book to get rid of that soreness.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Pushing yourself to Power is GREAT
In Pushing Yourself To Power John Peterson does a wonderful job of defining a body weight approch to exercies. I have read and followed several books that advocate body weight exercies. John's is the best. It is laid out nicely, with clear explination and phots. I have already recommeded it several times. It is great for the beginer and the advanced.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great book!
I got this book back in November 2006. As like with a couple of other people I had problems with the binding but once I contacted John Peterson via email, I received a free new spiral bound copy. I have 8 children at home and they are always going through the book and it is still holding up. This book has changed my life as well as the lives of my family. We exercise almost everyday together using these exercises and we have a blast! I have gone from a 38 down to a 32. I am 47 years old and you can see the outline of my abs now. Also the forum on the website for this book is great. You get alot of advice and make alot of friends. Once you have the exercises down which aren't that difficult to learn it will change your life.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Content good. Package sucks!
Probably the most comprehensive calisthenic book I've ever read. With that said, the binding to this book is cheap, real cheap! the pages easily separated from the binding. This should have been physically put together more professionally. Otherwise excellent content.
