Saviti (Savi) Murray has let her curiosity get her in trouble before but now it just might help her save a planeload of people. Savi knows that the best thing would be for her to get some outside help, and she sends out a computer message to the one person that might be able to arrange that, even if she doesn't' really like the guy all the time. Even with the promise of help, Savi also prepares a plan B because if she is going to go down - it's going to be with a fight.

Colin Ames-Beaumont is a vampire, but because of how he was changed, not what you would call ordinary by any means. Colin has lived for two hundred years and anyone can still tell he was an aristocrat during his life. Not really interested in helping the vampire community rebuild itself, when Savi reaches out for help, Colin doesn't lose a second in replying.

The nightmare flight is the beginning of Savi and Colin learning not only that demons and Wyrmwolves are escaping but they are also targeting them. With the help of the Guardians and the vampire community, both Savi and Colin fight to destroy the demon and Nosferatu out to gain acess to the one place that could bring them power. Along the way, Savi and Colin learn that it's useless to fight their attraction and passion, however they have both been exposed to unusual circumstances in their lives. When faced with only problems, can Colin's determination and Savi's extreme intelligence help them discover the way for them to have forever together?

Demon Moon deals with Colin and Savi's highly complex lives and just how they found a way to be together for eternity. Colin has been just going day by day until he meets Savi and then when she is placed in danger, Colin knows that he will risk it all to save her. Savi is highly intelligent and has a greatly developed curiosity that has gotten her in trouble before. When Savi and Colin are thrust together the swipes they take at each other reveal the passion and wants they have felt from the beginning. I felt the passion, love and needs they felt for the other and wondered with them if there was possibly a way. The special care Colin and Savi took for each other was heartwarming. Demon Moon is a highly complex book that deals with several plot themes all at once. While it is not a fast read, I found it to be a highly gripping one and well worth the time - especially with the ending Colin and Savi receive. Paranormal lovers will find Demon Moon as a must read and will probably get wrapped up in the Guardian's series if they have not been reading it.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Although there were some good ideas, the writing style was too hard to understand.
The very first three chapters were great. They were about Savi, (a human woman) and a nosferatu (a vampire like creature) on an airplane. There were also a few other interesting thoughts during the book. The ending of the book was creative and satisfying concerning two events: (1) how a demon (the main villain) was killed and (2) what happened with the relationship between Colin and Savi. The plot during the rest of the book was uninteresting, drawn out and tedius. There were a variety of bad guys, wyrmwolves, nosferatu and a demon. The threats from wyrmwolves and nosferatu were never resolved, possibly to be continued in the subsequent book. At times I wanted the book to be over. My major problem was with the author's writing style being hard to understand. Below are some examples.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
HARD TO UNDERSTAND.
Several times I found myself rereading pages or paragraphs to understand what just happened. Maybe my brain isn't wired the same as other readers who liked this style. It was frustrating for me. Following are two examples for readers to judge for themselves.

Page 275: Colin (a vampire) is going to punish Denver and two other vampires who attempted to murder a human. "Colin tilted his head and sank his fangs into the boy's neck. Blood, thick and young and heady. He forced away the pleasure of it. And called up Chaos. The gentle murmur of voices alerted Colin to Castleford's arrival. Sitting on his heels, his elbows braced against his knees, Colin lifted his head and watched blearily as Lilith wrapped her arms around the other man's neck." (Several more sentences continue about Lilith, Castleford and Colin. The subsequent sentence includes Colin's thoughts.) "What a bloody ridiculous mistake channeling memories of Chaos had been, though he couldn't completely blame his headache on that realm. If he ever again had to punish a trio of idiots, he'd remember to seal their mouths shut first. Denver had screamed shrilly into his ear, as had the third boy. But they'd learned their lesson well."

After the sentence "And called up Chaos," I was confused as to what Colin did to the three. I would have preferred that the author move the sentences up to that place saying that Colin channeled the memory of Chaos to the three and they screamed at the visions they experienced. Then, the author would continue with Lilith's and Castleford's actions. Being out of sequence frustrated me.

Page 466: Savi walks into the bathroom, stares at the mirror. "Silent screams ripped through the small room. She didn't see herself transform. Savi prepared the breakfast out of habit, rather than hunger. Orange juice. A frozen blueberry waffle." The subsequent several paragraphs have Colin and Savi discussing breakfast and then she takes him to the bathroom to look in the mirror. At that point she tells him she had previously seen Chaos in the mirror.

The author initially left me wondering who was screaming and if it was Savi, why. I had to wait for more than a page until I read that it was Chaos she saw. The author never did explain what Savi transformed into or out of.

MINOR ANNOYANCE WITH ABBREVIATIONS.
Many chapters began with a paragraph which was an excerpt from a letter written by Colin or Savi to someone. Several times the author used an initial P or B rather than a name which was never explained. For example, page 393. "She was certain that B----- had written that blasted story, rather than P-----. I convinced her that she ought to conform to Continental fashion and take a companion." By the end of the book, I still didn't understand who B and P were.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The Guardians series book 2 - Excellent
It's 8 months after the happenings in Demon Angel. The Gates to Hell are to be closed for 500 years after the Mega Guardian Michael won a wager against Lucifer but Earth is not yet safe. There were quite a few escapee demons who managed to get out before the shut down, some creatures such as the Nosferati still lurk around and given that a high number of Guardians have Ascended (basically moved on to the afterlife) , humans are in dire straights. At the end of Demon Angel we learnt that Hugh and Lilith would work together to protect the world: they do that by managing the SI - Special Investigations - a special division of the Homeland Security that covers up any demon and vampire activity to keep the public ignorant about their existence and also to train new guardians, human and vampires.

Yes, vampires. You see, in this universe, vampires are not all that bad because they do not feed from humans - not because they are good and honourable but because they know that if bodies start to appear, humans would start to hunt them. So it has been decided ages ago, that the smart thing to do would be to feed from other vampires. And because bloodlust is a powerful experience that comes together with body lust and the vampire usually cannot stop himself from also having sex with the person he is feeding from, they usually try to find a partner, a consort to spend their lives with.

The vampire community is in tatters after most of the elders have been killed with the fire that destroyed Polidori's, the night club who was the centre of their community back in Demon Angel and Colin Ames-Beaumont has bought and rebuilt it. Now, the vampires are looking up at him, expecting that he will become their leader.

But Colin wants none of the responsibility - he just wants to carry on with his self-indulgent life. Colin is not a regular vampire: his blood is tainted both by the Sword that belonged to Michael and by the Nosferatu blood that was used for his transformation. This means that he has extra strength, can stand daylight, and has the power to feed from humans without killing them or without being remembered afterwards. Any human he feeds from or has sex with, thinks he was nothing but a fantastic dream. He is one of the most beautiful beings in existence and is extremely vain and egoistic, which is ironic since he has been cursed with not being able to look into a mirror without having visions of Chaos - a terrible realm to which he is an anchor to.

Then he meets Savitri Murray, Hugh's surrogate sister. Savi is an incredibly smart, curious young woman who has a fantastic memory and is a techie wizard. When a child, she witnessed the murder of her entire family and was saved at the eleventh hour by Hugh when he was still a Guardian. She has built strong psychic shields to protect herself from her memories which kind of separates her mind from her emotions and because of that, she runs - from responsibilities and from deep attachments with her lovers. She suffers a Nosferatu attack at the beginning of the book that will taint her blood and change her life forever.

And these are two individuals that carry the story in Demon Moon.

As Demon Moon begins, we learn that months ago, while they were both sent to Caelum for protection during the final events of Demon Angel, they had a fling that did not end well. Savi, now working for the SI, has trouble trusting Colin, who is after her relentlessly - he is attracted to her to scent and to her personality like never before. So they decide to become friends so that Colin can prove himself trustworthy before they can explore their attraction to each other. But always with the certainty that nothing more than a passing sexual relationship could ever happen between them: Colin , because of his tainted blood can not transform her into a vampire and he can't feed from one human forever else she would be weak so they have about one month in which to be together before Colin must find another source of blood - which as we know, usually comes with sex. And that is no good.

And that is only the beginning: we have their relationship in the centre stage yes, but this is a big theatre with other characters , demons , nosferati , vampires, plots, and the happenings that surround them in a crescendo till the climax of the book.

I found this instalment to have a completely different feel from Demon Angel with regards to the love story. In that one, we could see from the start that Hugh and Lilith were made for each other, two sides of the same coin, light and darkness, truth and lies and that from the start they were bound to find love in each other.

In Demon Moon , there is an uneasy feeling regarding Colin and Savi , who seem to be so superficial and careless having only passing relationship with other people and who can't, possibly, be ready for love.

But Meljean Brook's writing shines once more, as she surprises me by showing that they had more depth than anyone can see - as the story progresses we are shown layer upon layer of these characters, like, excuse me for the awful comparison, peeling an onion , where by showing us what they are trying to protect, we finally reach their core, or their hearts and when we do, the tale turns into a conflicted, deep, sometimes sad, love story. The forces that they have to face, their own tainted blood, their inner nightmares, are almost tragic. At points I feared that the happy ending would not come at all, as I could not see a way out of their predicament.

And as neither could them, their despair grew and I couldn't help but to feel for their misery and their sadness and I shed a tear or two. It took my breath away, the way their story was resolved, some of the turns the story had in the end were quite courageous - and felt deeply relieved that they did find a way to be together and happy.

In other words: another fantastic instalment in a series that is shaping up to be one of my favourites.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - My new favorite author!
Ms. Brook's characters are Unique, Complex, and thoroughly Delightful. Her mythology and world-building are fabulous - multilayered, intricate, and fascinating. I strongly recommend reading this series in order.

My Favorite Things: The characters. Sir Pup is fast becoming my favorite. The way Colin's speech is full of Regency words. How Ms. Brooks describes taste and smell. It's brilliant. I almost cried at the end, when Colin and Savi decide to "see what comes next", in a beautiful mirroring of a story told earlier in the book. (Totally reminded me of the old couple from Titanic.)

Our hero, Colin Ames-Beaumont, is a ridiculously beautiful vampire from Regency London (yay!) who has been cursed for the last 200 years. Sadly, our ridiculously vain hero cannot see his reflection and humans have a tendency to forget him as a beautiful dream. Colin's references to his early years cutting a swath through the ballrooms of London are terribly amusing. His vanity is terribly amusing. His olfaction is terribly erotic. Oooo lord, I will never again eat a mango without thinking of him. Our heroine, Savitri Murray, is a delightfully brilliant and modern human woman - a non-virgin tech geek with a photographic memory. Her Indian-American background and cultural traditions - the family expectations, arranged marriages, wedding customs, food - added depth to the character and were delightful to learn about.

Brief Overview of the Mythology: In the First Battle, Lucifer and his demons rebelled against heaven and were banished to Hell. The nospheratu (a creature like a super-vampire) waited to see who would win the battle before joining and were thus cursed, welcome in neither Heaven nor Hell. Some of the angels, who fought for Heaven, became Guardians to protect humans from the demons and nospheratu and other things that go bump in the night. Vampires are basically second-class citizens on Earth.

Plot: I can't really tell you without explaining a bunch of stuff that happened in Demon Angel, thus spoiling it for you. What can I say? Colin is attracted to Savi, but he hurt her in the last book when they hooked up. Savi is attracted to Colin, but he's not a very nice guy. A demon starts impersonating Colin, manipulating the vampire community in San Francisco to try an assassinate Savi. Wyrmwolves start escaping chaos and come after Savi. Lots of talk about the events of Demon Angel. Lots of fighting. Lots of erotic mango eating.

Recommended for: anyone who likes dark paranormal, fans of J.R. Ward, Lara Adrian, and Marjorie M. Liu. I promise you will love Meljean Brook!
