Editor's Notes and Comments:

Description:
Set in the sultry splendor of Rio de Janeiro, Wild Orchid stars Mickey Rourke (9 1/2 Weeks), Jacqueline Bisset ('Joan of Arc') and supermodel CarrÃ(c) Otis in a 'torrid' (Variety) adventure of the senses. Filled with 'exotic settings' (The Hollywood Reporter), it is a hypnotic odyssey that will leave you breathless and spellbound. Beautiful young attorney Emily Reed (Otis) travels to Rio to work with international negotiator Claudia Lirones (Bisset) on a multimillion-dollar deal. But once exposed to the raw sensuality of her surroundings, Emily is increasingly drawn into a world of erotic fantasy. Eager to guide Emily through this underworld is Claudia's old flame Wheeler (Rourke). Mysterious and seductive, Wheeler unleashes Emily's most primitive desiresÂ...even as she threatens to unlock his world-weary heart.

Amazon.com:
Back when he wasn't relegated to the lesser cable channels, soft-porn meister Zalman King uncorked this howler of a drama on moviegoers, who were initially titillated by the ratings battle, but then shrugged and went off in search of the subsequent cheap sensation. Model and subsequent Mickey Rourke squeeze Carré Otis plays a brilliant young attorney--well, we're told she's brilliant, although watching her in action, straining to wrap those puffy lips around her legalese dialogue, definitely conjures up other adjectives. She's dispatched to Rio de Janeiro under the guise of real-estate law and ends up seduced both by the exotic culture and by a brooding, highly misunderstood and frighteningly orange-skinned multimillionaire (Rourke). Kinky (for the time) sex games and deliriously mannered dialogue make this a rather pretentious exercise, unleavened by any truly erotic sensuality. Fun for taunting purposes, though. --David Kronke

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Lose yourself to find yourself
I'm actually a fan of WO's storyline that many swear doesn't exist, but this is probably because the sex and nude scenes pretty much efface it. Carre Otis plays an introverted and bookish yet latently sultry young lawyer named Emily, who lands a job with a firm that whisks her off to Rio de Janiero posthaste to finalize the negotiations of the purchase and renovation of a dilapidated motel. She seems to have led a very cloistered life, which makes her encounters in Rio's sultry atmosphere with the enigmatic millionaire Wheeler (Mickey Rourke) all the more intriguing. Gradually he breaks down her inhibitions as she succeeds in reaching him emotionally. Compared to some of today's movies, this one can hold its own.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Mickey Rourke has The Juice in Wild Orchid.
The French consider Mickey Rourke America's greatest actor. In the 80s, they loved him for his "cool, his on-screen cruelty, his seediness, his sexual depravity" (New York Times Magazine, 11/30/08), and for his "rumpled, slightly dirty, sordid. . . rebel persona (Mickey Rourke Biography - Yahoo! Movies). Just don't ask Rourke if he considers the French "more enlightened" than American filmgoers.

After recently experiencing Rourke's newest film, The Wrestler at the Denver Film Festival, I revisited The Wild Orchid. It is a little better than I remembered it. It goes without saying that Rourke's name has become synonymous with his roles as Robert 'Boogie' Sheftell in Diner, Charlie Moran in The Pope of Greenwich Village, John Gray in 9 1/2 Weeks, James Wheeler in Wild Orchid, and Marv in Sin City.

Directed by Zalman King (who collaborated with Adrian Lyne on 9 1/2 Weeks) and set in Rio de Janeiro, Wild Orchid (1990) is an erotic drama which tells the story of an international lawyer, Emily (Carré Otis), who flies to Rio with a business executive, Claudia (Jacqueline Bisset) to negotiate the purchase and development of a beach hotel. In Rio, Claudia introduces Emily to her millionaire friend, Wheeler (Rourke). Emily is sexually naive. Wheeler has intimacy issues. The film is known for a graphic, possibly unsimulated sex scene between Otis and Rourke. (Rourke and Otis were romantically involved during filming. They subsequently married in 1992 and then divorced in 1998. In a 2004 interview, Otis denied the rumors that the infamous sex scene was unsimulated.) The controversial scene prompted film critic Roger Ebert to call for a new film rating (the NC-17 rating), which the MPAA had not yet introduced as an alternative to the X rating. There are two versions of Wild Orchid, King's original R-rated version with a running time of 105 minutes, and an unrated Director's uncut version with a running time of 111 minutes. Both are equally sensual. I've read that Brooke Shields turned down the role of Emily because she knew that nudity would be required. While the film was considered controversial at the time of its release, the sex scenes are rather tame by today's standards. Recommended mostly for Mickey Rourke fans.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Still a sleaze bag
This is Mickey Rourke's typical sleaze bag role. The film isn't even accomplished enough to be considered soft porn. Zalman King should have abandoned his efforts in mainstream filmmaking and gone straight into the adult industry. He probably would have had more fun and would have saved us from such complete crap.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Plucking the Flower
"Wild Orchid" is one of Zalman King's pretentious "erotic" thrillers of the '90s. It starred then-hottie Mickey Rourke,as well as his then-girlfriend Carre Otis. Rourke stars as an aloof gazillionaire named Wheeler who longs for the human touch. Carre Otis is Emily,a naive, virginal Midwesterner who knows six languages (but can't act) Jacqueline Bisset is Emily's scheming mother Claudia. It's set in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro. Though the movie opens with multiple shots of the Christ of the Andes, this movie doesn't have a prayer.

One of Emily's very first experiences is watching a couple make love underneath a leaky drainpipe in an abandoned building. It turns out she's not the only voyeur in Rio. After snuggling up to her wearing a silly bear mask, Wheeler makes her watch a couple get intimate in a limo. He also makes her lose her virginity to an Ugly American (and I do mean ugly) There's plenty of pretentious dialogue. Wheeler whines about how unloved he is&doesn't trust anybody, while Emily is inarticulate and stares blankly.

"Wild Orchid" was infamous for the consummation scene between Wheeler&Emily... but it's not a sexy movie. For all the sex&nudity,"Wild Orchid" is an unintentional hoot. There's nothing sexy or sensual about it. "Wild Orchid" wilts, flaccid,on the stem.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Gread, Passionate Movie
Loved this movie, only thing I didn't like was how low the volume was. Very memorable movie. Saw it a few years ago and the only thing I seemed to forget was the title. Remembered a good bit of the scenes just not the title. Finally bought it by pure chance and it was the movie I had been looking for, for years. Great movie, plan to watch it many more times. If thinking about buying this or seeing it, give it a shot. Chances are you won't regret doing so.
