Product Description:
An introduction to the practice of Yin Yoga that emphasizes its meditative roots and provides balance to our modern, yang lifestyles
• Offers an alternative to the outwardly oriented yang-style yoga practices in use today
• Contains a deck of posture cards that assists users in designing a personalized practice and a 75-minute audio CD with a guided routine led by the author
Yin Yoga is known as the quiet yoga. Many of the most popular forms of yoga, such as Ashtanga and Power Yoga, are fundamentally yang in nature, based on rhythmic movements of the muscles and focused on the need for change and attainment. Yin Yoga, in contrast, does not concentrate on the muscles but on connective tissue and bones, the parts of our body that are closest to our core and critical to our physical well-being and range of motion. The postures are all practiced on the floor and each is held for a lengthy period, usually three to five minutes. This intense non-movement allows us to experience the poses in a deeper way that enables the muscles to relax, the nerves to calm, and the surrounding connective tissue to remain healthy and supple. This meditative approach is more akin to those found in the earliest Hatha Yoga traditions.
In The Yin Yoga Kit Biff Mithoefer presents 14 poses used in Yin Yoga and explains each posture’s benefits, including which chakras and meridians will be most positively affected. The individual posture cards included illustrate the poses, provide advanced and modified variations, and assist users in designing a personalized practice sequence. The 75-minute CD contains a sample guided routine narrated by the author, with each pose presented on a separate track so listeners can rearrange them or shorten the routine as needed.

Yin yoga is a wonderful way to increase your flexibility. If you're a beginner, this is a great way to prep your body for more advanced poses. If you're a yogini already, you will find that yin yoga is a fine compliment to all other types of yoga (hatha, vinyasa, ashtanga, etc.) However, the biggest challenge in yin yoga is holding each pose for a long time (at least 5 minutes). That is why this kit, which includes a CD, is a terrific way to practice. Biff Mithoefer's instructions on the CD are clear, informative, and engaging. He gently talks you through each pose so that you are able to receive the full benefits without becoming impatient. Also included are a number of flash cards that show both basic and advanced versions of each pose. Before starting your practice, I recommend reading the book that comes with the kit, as it gives an excellent introduction to the practice of yin yoga. I have been practicing regularly since I got the kit, and have been getting excellent results!

This is a great compliment to more "muscular" yoga. Biff's kit is a wonderful intro if you can't get to a class with him. Very accessible & user friendly for people at all levels of yoga involvement. Very deep work - literally, as it focuses on bones & deeper tissues. Worth trying out.

I had the Paul Grilley DVDs and thought this would take me further. It doe contain a lot of detail on meridians and acupuncture points but in terms of the yoga it was less thorough than the Paul Grilley. The packaging, however, is very nice. If you haven't got into yin yoga yet - I would recommend you buy the Paul Grilley DVDs! The Yin Yoga kit is largely a re-packaging in my opinion

I'd buy it again! In fact I have for a friend. I like Biff's style and his easy to use set. His thoughts are insightful and beautifully simple. I refer to his book all the time and enjoy using the cards as well.
Try it!

This box set is very well designed and works well for even reluctant yoga participants (like myself). The book explains things in great detail...more details than I needed but some folks might appreciate them. I also think it will take me a long time to "out grow" it since there is so much information there. I find the CD most helpful because I can focus on my own practice instead of trying to watch someone else on a video or at the front of a class. It is set up so you can either listen to Biff on the very first 12 tracks as if you are taking a yoga class from him, checking with the cards as needed, or simply repeat the 13th track as a gentle timer for your poses. I especially like the way Biff emphasizes the importance of listening to your own body instead of trying to change things all the time. A good life lesson as well.
