Product Description:
All the political maps and statistics have been updated in this award-winning book. The society's world-renowned cartographers, working with education consultants and geographers have created a state-of-the-art world atlas for children ages 5 to 8. Large, easy-to-read maps introduce youngsters to the world and each of its continents. Full-colour photographs, carefully selected for their appeal to young children, supplement the maps and make people, places, and natural wonders come to life. Through simple but fact-filled text, children begin exploring the world by learning about maps and how to read them. Then they begin their continent-by-continent tour. Each continent begins with a welcome from a young native child, followed by an illustrated physical map with brief bulleted discussions of land regions, water, climate, plants, and animals. Similar treatment is given to the political map except the topics are countries, cities, people, languages, and products. Each spread features full-colour images that are keyed to the maps. Backmatter includes a map keyed to a chart of geographic superlatives, a glossary, a pronunciation guide, and an index.

I bought this book for my son who is 3 1/2. Yes, there was one for very young children that I could have got, but this book will grow with him, at least through elementary school. He often hears bits of information such as "This dinosaur fossil is from China," then comes running to me asking where China is. Now I can show him on maps that are designed for children, colourful, bold, with pictures of daily human life that he can easily understand. I recommend this book for any parent.
Any parent trying to decide between the one for toddlers and this one, do get this book. It will grow with your child!

This is a pretty good very first World Atlas for a young child, but as a fan of geography, it's a little disappointing for a National Geographic production. The good things about the book is that it's very visually appealing, it includes physical as well as political maps for each continent, and it has a great "World At A Glance" section and a Glossary at the end. Two key areas that were disappointing for me were: 1) only three countries get their own pages: Canada, the U.S., and Australia; and 2) the book is divided by continent, and the continent of Australia only includes the country of Australia, not New Zealand or any of the Pacific Islands.
I was hoping for more country descriptions and at least a mention of Australia/Oceania including more than Australia.
