Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Awful Character Development, Mildly Interesting Plot
I have been reading this at my high school library. I have continued reading it only because there is nothing better there.

The idea is clever. The art is great. The thing that stops this book from being good is teen angst.

You are introduced to several main characters at once. I have to say, I am nearly finished with this book, and I still don't know that much about any of them. They are all rushed into a story which is quite interesting. Yet the characters themselves are bland.

The authors have decided to inform you about these characters through fits of teen angst. Every character gets to rantabout how "I always hated my parents" and "We're all alone in the world". I've never wanted characters to shut up more.

The romance is horrible. The main romance goes like this:

Guy suddenly finds goth girl attractive.
They kiss almost instantly.
The team finds this random guy off the street to join the team, so the goth girl starts making out with him instead (after about 5 lines of dialog between the two of them)

And, you get the picture.

Before the couple's very first kiss, the goth girl is talking about how she always thinks about death. And then the guy says to her that he's always found it a miracle that he hasn't died earlier. He then follows up by saying that the girl is (and I'm paraphrasing here, but just barely) "an island in a sea of awful".

The plot is interesting, but is overshadowed by the emotional garbage untile the end of volume one. I'll have to read more to see if it's been worth the read.

The teens ruin the story, and that's pretty bad, seeing as the whole book's abou them. Teenagers don't start kissing after meeting each other 5 minutes ago, and they don't constantly ponder death and how much they despise their parents. If you don't mind characters shallower than a kiddy pool, then this is a book for you.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Weird premise
When I very first heard the premise for Runaways, I was a little skeptical. It didn't sound to me like it would be worth reading. I was wrong. I've learned now to never doubt Brian K. Vaughn about anything. The man is the best comic writer out there right now, be it runaways, y the last man, ex machina, etc. The dialogue in Runaways was really witty and delivers a ton of laughs. In typical Vaughn fashion, Runaways is filled to the brim with pop culture references that never fail to elicit at least a chuckle. The artwork wasn't great, but it'll do for the story being told. Even after just 1 volume of Runaways, I'm hooked. Do yourself a favor and read it. You won't be sorry.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Runaways, Vol. 1
A really good to start getting into comics. Once i started reading i could not put it down. I just finished Vol. 3 and waiting 4 to come in. If ever felt like running away when you were a kid and wished you had powers. This is the book for you. ; )

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Book for children
I do admit this might be a good book for juvenile readers but with little interest for adult reader. Just a collection of clichés with a manga-inspired artwork.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Ran away with my heart
