Disclaimer: I am a scientist, but only an amateur marine biologist.
I have read several books and many articles on specific aspects of marine biology, but there is no substitute for a good review of the whole field from a practicing scientist and teacher in the field that also has a sense of humour and some perspective.
I highly recommend this book.
