Product Description:
Welcome to a forest filled with water. In the wet season, the swollen Amazon becomes a looking glass into another world, where pink dolphins swim like something from a dream. In Peru they are called bufeo colorado—the ruddy dolphin. Their colour ranges from white to gray to a vivid pink. These astonishing mammals, actually river-dwelling whales, easily navigate their way through the complex, hazardous world of the Amazon rain forest.
Encantado invites readers on the adventure of a lifetime as we travel into one of the world's most lush and beautiful jungles in search of these magical creatures. Our guides include scientists and researchers as well as the local people, who have lived with the encantados—the enchanted ones—literally at their doorsteps for centuries.
Our main guides are the dolphins themselves. They lead us into myth. They take us back in time to a prehistoric era. They alone can show us the depth of the Amazon's beauty, diversity, and magic—and help us to keep our planet rich and whole.

Last year when I when I was planning to go to the Amazon, I read Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest by Sy Montgomery. It was an adult documentary about the author's journey in search of the Amazonian pink river dolphin. I not only enjoyed the book, but I fell in love with this amazing creature.
When I found Encantado: Pink Dolphin of the Amazon by the same author, I had a certain expectation that I would be in for a treat. I was not disappointed. Encantardo captures the essence of adventure, nature, and the illusive habits of the boto rosa, as the natives or Indios call the pink dolphin.
This picture book, clearly geared to young people, is one that will enthrall adults as well. I loved the format, the photographs, and the information. I thought I knew a great deal about botos, especially after my own experiences of swimming with them in the wild, but I learned many new things from this book. The pictures are wonderful. I know from my own attempts that capturing a photo, never mind more than a glimpse, of a pink dolphin is difficult.
What I particularly liked about Encantado was the author's obvious enthusiasm for her subject. What makes this book special is that she is able to translate her enthusiasm to the written work and invite the reader to become involved in caring about and safeguarding this extraordinary animal and the phenomenal rainforest that allows it to survive.
I would recommend this book to families, children and adults, who love wildlife and who have a respect and love for the environment. I think that many young people would become excited to learn that pink dolphins exist, that they are very intelligent, and that they are part of an ecosystem that is unique and necessary to the rest of the world. When readers learn that the lives of these remarkable creatures are in danger, I think they will be glad to find resources in this book that help direct them toward solutions.

This is a marvelous book for your kid, your nephew or niece, your grandchild.
Full of the excitement of discovery and the adventure of investigating a little-known creature in a dazzlingly diverse and mysterious rainforest world.
A fun read, and packed with great facts kids will want to learn and share. More than facts, though, the book gets across the idea that the young reader CAN be an explorer, CAN be a scientist, and CAN help save the rainforest. Every kid should read this, and it would make a great addition to grade school curricula.

Encantado guides readers on an amazing Amazonian journey, ostensibly to ferret out information on pink dolphins. Montgomery, however, is fishing for young conservationists! Her enthusiasm, glorious descriptions and hilarious comments disguise the fact that Encantado is not only a beautiful, information-packed picture book, it also represents a very real problem in a very real place that is vitally important to all of us.
I wish I'd had this book when I was a kid!
