Posession. Murder. Mayhem.
Let the games begin...
Exorcism isn’t a job, it’s a calling—and a curse. Just ask Morgan Kingsley, a woman who has a stronger aura than any Demon. Or so she thought. Now, in a pair of grey leather pants and a kick-ass tattoo, Morgan is heading back to Philadelphia after a nasty little exorcism—and her life is about to be turned upside down…by the Demon that’s gotten inside her.
Not just any Demon. Six foot five inches of dark, delicious temptation, this one is to die for—that is, if he doesn’t get Morgan killed first. Because while some humans vilify Demons and others idolize them, Morgan’s Demon is leading a war of succession no human has ever imagined. For a woman trying to live a life, and hold on to the almost-perfect man, being possessed by a gorgeous rebel Demon will mean a wild ride of uninhibited thrills, shocking surprises, and pure, unadulterated terror. . . .

This story is about an alternate US in which demons exist, we know about them, and there are groups that worship them into taking on hosts or hate them and try everything to burn them out of existence.
Morgan Kingsley is an exorcist. Her family is pro demon and convinced her brother Andrew to host a demon. Morgan learns that she is possessed by a demon and not just any old demon, the king himself. But she has a supper strong aura and no one can detect he is in her. The only way he can control her is when she is asleep, thus the sleepwalking and notes left to herself.
Among other things happening in her life, there is a big demon civil war in the works. Lugh, the king, believes in human rights, that demons should work with consenting humans and such. His brother, on the other hand, thinks that demons should take over the humans and throw us away when done. Lugh was basically put into Morgan to keep him out of the way as his brother takes things over.
I liked how the story flowed. I enjoyed how Morgan is a tarnished hero with her own problems, but that she steps up to the plate when she is needed. I really like this book and recommend it to anyone that likes the paranormal romance books but with a new twist from vampires.

I thought the main character acted strangely against her own best interests on several occasions.
The guy on guy sex scenes were a dead spot in the book. I'm not aware of too many heterosexual women that are stimulated by guy on guy action.

After I read the latest Kim Harrison novel, I decided I'd try another book centered around demons. I was very annoyed at the reviews on here bashing the erotic content. All of the best Laurell K Hamilton books have been slammed for erotic content and I'm sick of it. This book is NOT centered around sex, there is actually a plot. This book is very refreshing and different in a world of cookie cutter dark fantasy books. I don't mind that the main character already has a boyfriend at the start of the book, it just adds more to the plot. The concept is original, and I can't wait to find out more about the demon world presented in this novel.

The Devil Inside was a fast-paced, well-written urban fantasy novel that was so entertaining I couldn't put it down until I had read it cover to cover.
Morgan isn't your average hero, and is even reluctant to see herself as such. She likes playing the part of the rebel and often dresses just for the reaction her clothes get her. While Black likes to go into details about Morgans outfits, the descriptions aren't overly wordy nor do they take precedence over the actual plot of the book.
For those who dislike relationships between characters of the same sex, I would NOT suggest they read this book. Not only are two of the male characters in this book in a relationship, they are "together" in front of Morgan in the most literal sense of the word. This, I did not mind in the least, and even applaud Black for her portrayal of a working relationship between two men.
That being said the sexual content of the book could have been scaled back in certain sections in favor of more plot. Though I don't mind erotic scenes, I am much more interested in the fabulous world that Black has created between the demons and humans.
The actual S&M content of this book is not as graphic as some of the reviews had led me to believe. That doesn't mean it isn't in the book, but it is used as a means to an end rather than the main focus of the story. This will not be the very first or last fantasy book to feature an S&M club as a setting.
Overall it was a very entertaining read, and I can't wait to read the second!
