Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - 3.5 stars - This paranormal romance series starter has a very standalone feel
I liked Destiny Kills but I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the kickoff to Arthur's latest series quite as much as I would have, had I known going in that I was reading a paranormal romance. For some reason I was expecting the more suspense urban fantasy of Arthur's Riley Jensen Guardian series, and I kept waiting for gorgeous thief Trae Wilson to betray our heroine Destiny McCree instead of enjoying the romance between pair.

Arthur uses Destiny's situation at the start of the book to effectively introduce the rules of Destiny's world - Destiny starts out with no memory of herself and how she came to be naked on a strange beach with a dead naked man, other than she knows that she's not human - revealing the details to us, as Destiny's memory returns in large chunks. And as effective a device as this was, it was also nice that that Arthur didn't drag it out for the whole book, because it would have only slowed down the action - Destiny has places to go, family to see, people to rescue and pursuers to elude and fortunately with Trae along she may actually succeed. But even though the book keeps moving along pretty well, all of the challenges to Destiny and her relationship with Trae are handled without a great deal of muss or fuss, so that the parts of the book I liked the best were the ones in which Arthur breaks the action and describes to describe Destiny and Trae in their other forms - I really liked Destiny's interactions with the sea, but then shapeshifters are probably my favorite otherworldly beings, and Destiny and Trae's dragon forms are pretty cool.

Even though Destiny Kills is supposed to be the very first book in a new series it has a very standalone feel, all of the problems facing Destiny and Trae feel very resolved by the end of a book and their happily ever after seems to be pretty well establish, so I have no idea where Arthur will take her series next.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - My fav. Author pulls through again
Really loved this book. I have read every one of Keri Arthurs books and although some not as FANTASTIC as others the VAST MAJORITY of time they are just that FANTASTIC.
No matter what, she never fails to deliver, and I would never miss any of her excellent reads.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Not quite there, especially for a series
This book was a pleasant quick read. I've read Keri Arthur's Riley series and I'm a big fan of those. This book just didn't live up to that series.

PROS:

1. There was just enough character and plot development to make this book an enjoyable read. I felt the beginning of the book had a lot of potential and the ideas were good.

2. This was a very light read. While this fact probably leads to my negative points, it is nice to have a light read every once in awhile to clear the brain. However, I wish I'd known to expect this before I started reading as I wasn't looking for such a light read at the time.

CONS:

1. The character plots (especially the romantic element) were resolved too quickly for a series. At the end of this book I was left with no desire to learn more about the main characters. However, if this is a series where we get a different main character each book then I might come back for more. If it's the same characters then I probably won't be back. The one exception is that the book hinted that both the main characters were special/different than most dragons but this was never thoroughly explored. I might come back if this becomes a central theme.

2. Very similar to number one but the plot resolutions were just too easy and quick in general. If not for the sex scenes I'd almost think this book was young adult. There was so much potential and I wish time was taken to explore the characters and cultures in this book. I felt it barely scratched the surface. After reading the Riley series I found this very disappointing.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - A Disappointing Book
Keri Arthur writes the kind of books that I have to read in one sitting. And I like to revisit them. I don't get tired of reading them.

Destiny Kills is her latest book, a foray into a different urban fantasy series, this one about sea dragons. Think Loch Ness. Destiny is a sea dragon who can assume human form. She's just escaped from a lab that's been experimenting on her and her family and is running for her life. She meets up with the required male for the romantic element of the story.

I wish I could say it lived up to the Riley books. It had a slow and confusing opening, and I had trouble getting past the very first couple of chapters. Nearly a hundred pages passed before it started to get into the story. The characters literally spend most of the novel running from place to place while bits and pieces of Destiny's life laboriously unfolds. There's a stone that's supposed to be an important bargaining chip in the story, and then hardly anything gets done with it. Despite all the chasing around and some action, the pacing was surprisingly slow and often flat.

A disappointing read from an author I like.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Really 41/2 stars- fast-paced, edgy fantasy
Wonderful thrill ride with suspeneful characters. This was a great fantasy book that I read in 2 hours. Keri Arthur has a very fertile imagination which I also enjoyed in her Guardian series. But unlike her Guardian series this book has an actual ending where her Guardian series seems to keep you going with each book then leave you hanging. If you love shapeshifters, mystery and strong characters I would recommend giving this book a try.
Destiny wakes up with amnesia. She doesn't know why she is subsequent to a dead man or why she feels she must flee for her life. But she does know she has special powers that she is being hunted for. As she runs for her life she is taken in by Trae Wilson who mysteriously looks like the dead man she left behind. Although she knows she shouldn't, she is wildly attracted to him. As they both try to uncover her past their loyalties are tested.
