Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Angieville: HEAT STROKE
Wow. Rachel Caine wasn't kidding with the end of Ill Wind (Weather Warden, Book 1). And the second Weather Warden book, HEAT STROKE, takes that unexpected ending and runs with it. Wild. And Jo doesn't get much more of a breather than the reader does as she's plunged headlong into life as a Djinn. Or one half of a Djinn. Or a Djinn in training. Who can tell for sure?

Good thing the lovely David is there to help her get a grip on her new reality. Unfortunately, it turns out David broke a few not-so-minor rules when he saved her life and the head Djinn Jonathan isn't happy with him. No, sir. Jonathan's not a bit happy. Before she can catch her breath, he turns Jo over to the rather dubious (but hilarious) Patrick to complete her training. In a week. Or die. And if Jo dies? Yep, you've got it. David'll be gone too. *sob* Of course, it's Jo we're talking about here. So the words "fighting chance" actually mean something. Plus, where Jo is, Lewis can never be very far. And with Lewis lurking about, waggling his fingers at the cosmos, channeling a grown up Charles Wallace Murry like nobody's business, chances of surviving an apocalypse are slightly better.

Even so, nothing is as it seems in this book and you can't necessarily trust who you thought you could. I've tried to avoid spoilers for the following books in the series, so I don't know where Caine is going with all this mayhem, but I kind of dig it. Gives the whole series an unsettling, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants feel while keeping the characters consistent and very, very interesting.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Life as a Djinn
Joanne used to be a Weather Warden, someone with powers that could help control the weather that would get out of hand and kill people without their intervention.... that was before she killed a Warden in self-defense, was hunted down as a renegade by other Wardens, attacked by a mysterious enemy and eventually died--but was put into a djinn's body by David, a powerful djinn and her lover. That was in the very first book... Now Joanne needs to find out how being a djinn works and David only has a few days to teach her before things go crazy again.

These weather warden tales are full of non-stop action, suspense and mystery, interesting characters and not a little romance. Joanne is a wise-cracking girl who likes nice shoes and knows her way around muscle cars. The djinns, magical creatures who are slave/aides to the wardens are fascinating.

However, I had a few problems with the characters' choices and motivations and with aspects of the plot that seem a bit deus ex machina. (I will discuss specifics that will have spoilers in the comments, if anyone wants to know.) It seemed that some things just happened because it made for more action, rather than made any internal sense. Certain things made me want to throw the book across the room--but I kept reading because the characters and story, otherwise, were still compelling.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Really deserves 4.75
I really enjoyed this book. I find this series to be very original. I am a bit disappointed that Jo didn't remain how she was (not to give too much away) but it was still good and held my attention nonetheless. David and Jo have got to be one of the most tortured couples I've ever read about. I also hated what happened to Lewis and Jonathan by the end. I'm looking forward to seeing what horrible destruction Kevin will cause.

other books I enjoy: Kim Harrison- Rachel Morgan series, Jenna Black-Morgan Kingsley series, Larissa Ione- Demonica series, Ilona Andrews- Kate Daniels series, Richelle Mead- Georgina Kinkaid series and Dark Swan Series, Audra and Stella Price- Eververse series, Yasmine Galenorn- Sisters of the Moon series, Vicki Pettersson- Zodiac series; Jackie Keller- Hell on Earth series, T.A. Pratt- Marla Mason series; Mark Henry- Happy Hour of the Damned

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A happy surprise
Going by the book cover, I didn't think I would like this book, & the whole weather thing didn't sound that interesting, but now I'm hooked on this well written & fast paced series.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Second Time Around
I was pleasantly surprised by the very first book in this series - 'Ill Wind' - and was somewhat looking forward to reading the follow up. It didn't take me long to lose some of that enthusiasm as I started to get the impression that Heat Stroke was going to go much more into the romance novel direction than the very first book. But I persevered, because there is nothing worse than a reviewer that say, "It was so bad I didn't finish it". I do not care what you have to say about a book if you did not read it (now I will climb down off my soapbox).
Heat stroke did not turn into a romance novel, but continued the style and flair of the very first book. There are elements of romance, and I would go so far as to say that it is the core theme of the book, but the story itself is about 'real' people living in a very unreal world. Most of the characters feel like they are alive. There are some exceptions. I did think the villains in Heat Stroke could have been given a little more depth. That and the cliffhanger ending are the main reasons I went with 4 stars, but I will read the subsequent book in the series.
People who like the Charlene Harris `Southern Vampire Mysteries', Jim Butcher's `The Dresden Files' and/or Carrie Vaughn's "Kitty" books will probably like this `Weather Warden' series - and vice versa.
