I'll make this brief. Nightseer was paced almost too quickly. Not enough places for the reader to catch their breath. It also needed more back story and requires one, if not two more volumes to finish the story. Yet Ms. Hamilton has moved on to bigger and better things. I enjoyed the book. It just needed better pacing.

I picked up this book because I couldn't find the Anita Blake series but figured I'd get a taste of her writing.
Big mistake. Now I'm rather afraid to pick up the Anita Blake series if this is the kind of writing I have to look forward to.
There was little character development and almost no explanation for the reasons behind the events. At the end I had no attachment at all to the main character and had no idea why half of the events happened.
Don't waste your time.

I would like to start by saying I really did enjoy this book. I gave it 4 stars because the story was interesting, the characters well-developed, and I didn't ever feel like I knew what would happen subsequent (something I hate in books). Overall, it was a fun book to read, and I'm glad I picked it up.
However, it's obvious that it was her very first novel. While reading, I often felt like the story's pacing was off. Hamilton would spend pages and pages describing some events and then rush through others at lightning speed, yet there seemed to be no difference in the events' importance to the story. It just felt like she hadn't fully fleshed out some of the things that were going to happen, so they didn't get details they probably should have for a more balanced book. My other big issue is with the ending. Don't worry, no spoilers! Basically, it just felt chopped off, like the story isn't finished or there needs to be another book. Sadly, there isn't.
Still, it's a good story, and if you like Hamilton, you should read it.

I became a big fan of Hamilton's Anita Blake series a year ago, on the recommendation of an employee at the book store. I loved her writing right away, and when I found out about Nightseer, I had to get it. (I mostly read fantasy) It has everything I want in a good fantasy book--elves, interesting magic system, characters and story with depth, etc. I loved it!
