Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Paen Scott is a Dark One: a vampire without a soul. And his mother is about to lose hers, too, if Paen can't repay a debt to a demon by finding a relic known as the Jilin God-in five days. When he hires half-elf private investigator Samantha Cosse to help him, he sets her elf senses tingling. Which makes it pretty much impossible to keep their relationship on a professional level. Especially since Sam is convinced that she is Paen's Beloved-the woman who can give him back his soul, whether he wants it or not...

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Great Book
I stumbled upon Katie MacAlister books and I'm HOOKED. They are all fun adventures with humour and a little sizzle. This one is no exception. If you like fun vampire books, you'll love this one. This is just one in a series. Read them all.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Loved This Book
I have just found MacAlister as an author and I have to say this book made me laugh a lot. I enjoy some of the "lighter" vampire books and this one did not disappoint.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - different twist
yes there are spoilers so don't read till after you've read the book

Out of the Dark Ones books, I like this one the most. Primarily because it took a different take on the whole bond between a dark one and his beloved. It was the whole, 'what if a dark one doesn't want his beloved?'

I can only imagine living for as long as a dark one is famed to live, and in Paen's particular case, 260 some odd years, and not having yet found my one true love. I would imagine that I would've more than likely given up hope somewhere in those long years, especially given the very sad nature of the dark ones being wells of extreme sadness, pain, and anguish. I would imagine that one day, I'd put forth an effort to squash that part of me that longs for my beloved and try to be complete in myself.

So when it finally does happen for Paen, it's not really a shocker that he's in utter disbelief and denial after spending so many years breaking down the special bond to it's most clinical of definitions of 'a dark one literally can't exist without his beloved since he can't feed off anyone else'.

Is it excusable of how he treats Sam? Heck no. I've had guys treat me the exact same way and worse, so in reading that part where Paen lays it all out in how he feels, it felt personal for me. It reminded me of my more stupid and naive moments in life. But in saying that, I think that it's important that an author puts such 'human' moments in their writing so that the readers can either sympathize or empathize with the characters. So for people to say that Paen's an *** for acting the way he does, and Sam's dumb for acting the way she does, those reader's need to realize that there are literally people out there in the world that would react the same exact way.

I think the only thing I wasn't too crazy about was the fact that couldn't figure it out sooner that the statues were one in the same.

Overall, if it hasn't been obvious throughout the review, I really liked this book for it's human moments and a bit more closer to reality character reactions on the parts of Sam and Paen.

I love the fact that there's an introduction of other mystical creatures such as faeries and elves, some might find that stupid and think i'm contradicting myself, but hey these characters have assimilated to earth and the humans that live here, so they may be mystical creatures, but their emotions are reflections of their surroundings.

Anyway, if you ever read this Mrs. Macalister the book rocks in my opinion. :)

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Katie Macalister does it again!!!
I am a little behind on my reading but I finally got to this this book.

I enjoyed the store very much. Like the other books from Katie Macalister this one was funny and fun to read. I enjoyed Paen and Sam's relationship which grows to love throughout the book.

Samantha Cosse is an investigator.

Paen is a Dark One, a vampire, without a soul.

Sam is very first hired to find a manuscript then Paen hires her to find a statue that would save his mother's soul. Both Sam and Paen not knowing that the two are connected.

This book is fast paced and full of action, pain, and of course, love. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read.
