I read this book years ago when it was very first published, and found its philosophy of self centeredness and selfishness to be appalling. Ringer ideas are great if you care about nobody and don't want anybody to care about you. After many years of working hard not to follow Ringer's advice, my life has turned out just fine, and I sleep very well at night!

Robert Singer offers a down to earth look at reality without any of the sugar coating often found in books about life perception and human interaction. Singer's no nonsense approach is direct and written from a distrusting and self preserving point of view; that you should arm yourself against everyone you interact with as everyone is looking our for their interest's first. This approach will rub some the wrong way as it may appear to have a coating of arrogance; however, proponents of Singer's advice will find that he is more interested in reality than with being polite.
Singer is perhaps at his best with his explanation of irrational selfishness versus rational selfishness. One could easily fall prey to dismissing Singer's approach of selfishness as of low human quality; yet a clear understanding of irrational versus irrational selfishness will be a benefit to anyone.
Looking Out for #1 combines pragmatism with substance provided in a slightly haughty tone. Singer's legal background results in an approach that also can appear a little dry and without feeling. One can find some good nuggets of information but I would not rush out to buy this book as there are far better books available on the topic.

I highly recommend this book to anyone for a multitude of reasons. It is applicable to many career paths. I found the book not only informative, but also validating. It always is good to hear someone who is held in high regard on a subject suggest using ideas we were uncertain of using for a multitude of reasons.

This is my favorite Ringer book, with Intimidation as second. The Action! book I didn't like.
I especially like how Ringer warns of Old man murphy and his pranks (murphy's law). A good book for the unforgiving business world, puts you as always in a "realistic" mentality, which is really the only way to navigate in this Jungle.
Also, he stresses value for value friendships, which is spot on.

Robert Ringer is a writer who has studied Ayn Rand and Objectivism and has always put great stock in both. He is a libertarian and a free thinker. He believes in individualism.
When I very first read this book some three decades ago I didn't know about Rand or Objectivism or really much about libertarians, with the capital L or without.
So re-reading it and now knowing about all of the above I enjoyed it even more than the very first time and I believe strongly in everything he wrote.
I read a reviewer who said that it is not relevant yesterday as we work in teams. We don't all work in teams. Most of us do not. And even if we do it has nothing at all to do with the fact we must look out for ourselves first.
This is a great book for anyone. It is as good yesterday as it was thirty years ago.
