Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - This Was Great!
Wow! What an amazing book!

I was so caught up by the Warriors series by Erin Hunter, that I didn't know that two new books from the Guardians of Ga'Hoole had come out. I quickly bought them, but put them aside to read something else. By this time, I had forgotten most of what happened. So I started from the First Collier and worked my way up.

This is the last book in the sub-series, The Legends of Ga'Hoole. In this book, the King Hoole, son of King H'rath and Queen Siv, grandson of King H'rathmore, has to live in a world with nachtmagen runs free amongst the hagsfiends. The evil Lord Arrin's troops have split since their last defeat, but is now regrouping. Theo's brother, Shadyk, has taken over the grand Ice Palace, which is rotting since there is no code of honor. Hoole must amass an army to drive out Shadyk and his evil followers, and drive away Lord Arrin's reforming group of evil hagsfiends and owls.

This book was great! It had a lot of suspense and it was worth the money!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A Well-written Book, Some Errors
I liked To Be A King, but I didn't love it. In the copy I got, there were quite a few errors, and Mrs. Lasky didn't tie up all of the loose ends as effectively as in her previous books.

The things I liked about this book in particular were the creative new characters, a new romance, and Hoole's transition from being a chick to an adult, from being a follower to a leader. Part of the book centers on the forces of evil (Pleek, Ygryk, Kreeth, and Lutta, Pleek and Ygryk's "daughter"), while the other part centers on the newly formed Guardians of Ga'Hoole.

In this book, the Guardians of Ga'Hoole are founded, and the final battle for the N'rythghar is waged. While King Hoole reigns over the S'rthgahr, chaos runs rampant in the N'rythghar. Lord Arrin is ammassing an army for a final invasion, while kraals, Ullryck's hagsfiend troops, and a mad upstart owl's forces fight for the spoils. King Hoole must also form an army before Short Light, or lose all hope of ever reclaiming his father's throne. Hoole gains new allies: Strix Strumajen the Spotted Owl, Sir Bors the Barn Owl, Sir Tobyfor the Northern Hawk Owl, Lord Rathnik the Snowy Owl, and many others.

New, dark forces also lurk, preparing to strike and steal the Ember of Hoole: the archfiend Kreeth, and the changeling bird Lutta. Lutta transforms into Emerilla, Strix Strumajen's lost daughter, in order to gain Hoole's trust and steal the Ember. But Lutta finds something much more than just the Ember...

There are also deaths in To Be A King, but nothing too disappointing. Basically, the entire book explains how the Guardians of Ga'Hoole came to be.

But there were some problems in the book. Some parts were poorly edited, and had many errors. At the end, it was unclear whether or how Lord Arrin, Ullryck, and Shadyk were defeated and/or killed. Sure, Hoole and the Guardians triumphed, but the whole battle was mostly vague.

Other than that, To Be A King is a great ending for the Legends triolgy and provides some insight on Book 12, The Golden Tree. I would reccommend this book to fantasy lovers.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - GUARDIANS OF GAHOOLE
I BOUGHT THE BOOKS BY KATHRYN LASKY FOR MY FOURTEEN YEAR OLD GRANDAUGHTER. THE FIRST ONE WAS ON HER BOOK LIST FOR SUMMER READING. AS SOON AS SHE BEGAN TO READ IT SHE ASKED IF THERE WERE MORE BY THE SAME AUTHOR. AFTER I FOUND ALL THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES I ORDERED ALL OF THEM FOR HER CHRISTMAS PRESENT THAT YEAR. SHE SHARES THEM WITH HER COUSINS BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS. THE STORIES ARE INTERESTING, EXCITING AND WELL WRITTEN.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Outstanding Book
My son has read this entire series (so far) and he just LOVES it! All of the books have kept him riveted!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great book!
In To Be a King, Hoole must fight against the odds in a battle in which enemy war lords are amassing armies of hagsfeinds and owls. A mad owl named Shadyk is amassing an army of young hagsfeinds, as is a hagsfeind named Ullryk, Lord Arinn's assasin. In the book, Hoole must decide to use the magic of the ember to restore N'yrthghar.

It is a very thrilling book in the series of Guardians of Ga'hoole.
