It's a decent collection of short stories, with the dark sensual atmosphere that one expects from Laurell K. Hamilton. The stories range from high fantasy to (allegedly) sci-fi. The quality also ranges - from okay to excellent. The excellents - "Here Be Dragons" - more than make up for the okay stories, and the quality is always at least enjoyable. It is good - if strange - candy, not high literature but not meant to be either. It is enjoyable, and that is enough.

I, like a few other readers, was losing faith in the Anita Blake series, which had long since been the source of my blinding reading joy. I felt trapped in this world that I loved with a writer that just seemed to be traveling in the same circles, always returning to the overdone sexual situations. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed every moment of the Anita Blake novels, but it's redundancy was wearing me thin. Then one day by amazing chance I picked up Strange Candy from my local library. I was enraptured from the very very first story to the end. It has been a long time since I was sad to end a novel. Each story was like a breath of fresh air, containing uniqueness and life that I hadn't seen in a long time from Hamilton.
This book is great for anyone looking to enjoy Hamilton's writing outside of her regular series, or someone who simply loves to read short stories.

If you're a fan of Laurell's earlier work then you should add this book to your collection. It's a good insight to her imagination and as the stories are early pieces of her work, it shows in her writing and her subjects.

I didn't realize that this was not a single story but a compilation of short stories. They're all a little wierd and disturbing but also clever with dark wit. Didn't regret getting it, but didn't like it as much as Laurell K. Hamilton's other work.

I really enjoyed reading this collection, especially because it is different from Hamilton's Anita Blake or Merry Gentry series. I am really surprised that a book like this would be considered bad erotica since the content is more sensual, than actually erotic. No, there aren't any gratuitous sex scenes (no real sex at all, come to think of it), but that is what makes it pretty great. I was able to read the book uninterrupted by someone trying to get in someone else's pants. Not that there is a problem with erotic scenes, but Hamilton covers that many times over with her other novels. I was happy to say that the purchase was worth it, especially the cupid story, which was fun to read because it was light, and breezy.
