Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - very inventive storyline
I was very pleasantly surprised that I liked this new genre of fantasy books. It could get pretty complicated to understand 2 different races, their powers, their characteristics...but this author did an absolutely fantastic job incorporating the explanations into the story and slowly letting more of their personalities unfold.

I loved the writing, it's fast paced and smart. The main characters were also very loveable. Sascha, the heroine, is not helpless, but has her own powers. I love the changeling animals, the males are very sexy.
Having the love scenes come up as dreams shared was quite creative. The entire plot and storyline was very creative and well done. I am reading the other books of this series! Wonderful to find another author to read.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Desperation Reading
You can read the synopsis elsewhere and decide if you want to spend the money, but my opinion is that any book that starts with a prolog that explains the history and premise of the book, followed by a very first chapter that beats you over the head with more background "thought bubbles" that tell you how the main character has a problem isn't particularly well written. And it goes down from there. I bought this, despite its title, on the basis of the excellent reviews. In my opinion, it's at best desperation reading--something to skim while waiting for something good to be released.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Really Intriguing..
So I just finished this book today. I was pleasantly surprised. I really did enjoy this book. The reason i was surprised- and I just have to get this mini rant out there- is because of the cover and the title!! It looks like a bargain book at a grocery store with a random dude with muscles on the front- with a cheesy title that makes it sound like it is going to be crap writing.
I never would have picked up this book at a book store if I saw it on the shelf. This is why romance books get such a bad rep! Ms. Singh may not have power over the visual presentation/marketing of her books- but she should know that the romance publishers seriously undermine her writing with the way the books look.(The cover for this book is the least of the evils- the other covers in the series progressively get worse) Covers shouldn't be that important- but they really are- if a person hasn't read a specific author, a lot of the time it's the cover (and title) that attracts the eye in a huge book store. Do you think a male reader would go anywhere near a register with this book with the way the cover looks? No way! Wouldn't you laugh your butt off if a guy you knew was reading a book called "slave to sensation"?? and that's sad because while i know the target audience is women, I think This book could be really liked by male readers. If packaged and titled the way it should be- it could and would be taken more seriously. The writing definitely has the Blade Runner/ Phillip K. Dick-esque edge to it. I just think it would reach a larger audience if it wasn't packaged like chip n' dale style erotica (not sexy), because it really is good writing. The only reason i bought it was because it was recommended so highly in the reviews and I am glad I did. Okay rant over. Sorry it wasn't really mini. Oh well.

As far as the story and the book itself- It was a little vague as far as setting up the world for you in the beginning- it needed more explanation on how humans, changelings and Psy split into groups in the very first place? I suppose Nalini just wanted you to think that in this world, it was always how it was. I really enjoyed the world she creates on the page- no matter how it came to be. I really liked the dialogue with Sacha and Lucas. It was sensual and while she overuses the word darling-(which bugs me i don't know why)- the heat was definitely sizzling. My favorite scenes were the ones in the book explaining about the psy-net itself and the shields/firewalls that Sascha creates. The complexity is beautiful and mind boggling to read. The dream scenes were also pretty hott. The structure of the world really spoke to my sci-fi fascination with the future- and the way we will interact and change as human beings-(or non human beings in this book's case) I always like an underdog heroine- someone who was born different-thought to be flawed- but in reality was just more special than most. The only part that bothered me was that Singh didn't go into the identity of Sascha's father- which I thought was odd. I was waiting for Sascha to say something about her father- after she stole her family's history from the net. But zippo. I was dissapointed- I thought for sure Sascha was going to find out something interesting about her father that further would explain her emotional capacity and power as an empath. But that was the only real negative- i think she could add more light moments- but other than that it was a really good very first book. I was glad i took a chance on the hope that it wasn't bad writing and trusted the fan's reviews, because it was good! I will keep reading the series- and am looking forward to reading the subsequent book in the series.( and I will probably like it too- even if I have to rip off the dang cover :)

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - An enjoyable and fulfilling read
If you have read any of the other reviews, then you know what this novel is about and I can save you the agony of rehashing every detail of the story before you have even read it.

Instead, I will hit the 3 top reasons we buy books like this.

1. THE STORY - I really enjoyed this story. It was complex enough to keep me interested but not so complicated that it lost me or made the more "intimate moments" come out of left field.

2. THE CHARACTERS - I have to give Mrs. Singh credit here. Her leading man was cocky, dominating and hot and her leading lady was complicated, willful and strong. What sets her characters apart from every other romance novel is that they have actual reasons to be this way. They have these character traits as a necessity for living. These characters are fleshed out very well.

3. THE SEX - I would be lying if I said that women only buy these books for the very first two reasons. The sex in this book was good but not over excessive. It was well written and had good pace. My only criticism was that I saw these characters doing different things. Enjoyable, but not what I envisioned from the initial set up.

All in all, I really liked this book and recommend it to anyone looking for a fulfilling read.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Not Amazing, but certainly a Very Good Read
Sascha Duncan has a deadly secret. She's one of the ruling Psy, a breed of humans who all have psychic abilities of some kind, but who have been conditioned from birth to have no emotions (particularly rage) in order to create a more perfect society. Her mother is a powerful member of the Council. Sascha is a cardinal Psy and ought to have had extraordinary power. Instead she tests low or average, a great disappointment. And worse, she has emotions that she needs to bind tightly, for the Psy do not tolerate aberrants and if discovered, she'll be sent to a 'rehabilitation center' and be mind-wiped.

Sascha works for her powerful family's business, which is participating in a rare deal with the changelings, Lucas Hunter in particular, the alpha of the DarkRiver pack who can shape-change into panthers and jaguars. The Psy look upon changelings and humans as lesser beings, but business is business. The changelings don't care for dealing with the Psy, either, but Lucas has an ulterior motive: changeling girls have been murdered and he suspects a Psy is behind it, but the Psy Council denies any Psy is less than perfect and all official investigation is mysteriously blocked. Lucas hopes to use Sascha, the liason with the Duncans, to gain information before it is too late and another changeling dies. Too bad he feels strangely attracted to the cold and perfect Psy...

The different social structures of the ruling Psy and the changelings make a fascinating backdrop for this story. The mystery itself is not amazing, but it is good enough to create suspense and drive the plot ahead.

Sascha is a sympathetic character; strong enough to survive among the Psy despite her secret and strong enough to fight for what she cares about. Lucas is the typical alpha male, dominant and sensual, but not over-the-top and obnoxious. They make a good match, which is essential in a romance.

The Amazon reviews are mostly raving... I don't think this book was so incredible, but it was certainly superior to many similar stories out there, and the world-building added an extra-dimension of interest. It was a well-written, satisfying tale with two strong characters, so it is worthy of a top rating.
