I read this book in one day.. from the moment i opened to the very first page till i finished reading the last i could NOT put this book down... if i would take a short break to do anything i would find my moments consumed by thoughts of the book and the romance of the characters. I'm not sure why this book is different to others.. just to me.. it touched me. I really felt like i was living the lives of these characters and this book will go into my faves! Two people from completely different worlds yet so completely suited to each other!

Okay, I finally caved in and bought this book (despite its high cost) since my flight was delayed and I was stuck in an airport over night. I had heard so much about it and the hero - who according to some readers was a dreamy character. Nothing could be further from the truth IMHO.
I know this was an earlier work of Lisa Kleypas' but I still expected more after reading such (mostly glowing reviews). The characters were well developed, as is Ms. Kleypas' style but I just did not sense a true connection in the beginning between the two leads. What I mean is, after their initial meeting they hardly spent any time together. Infact, I thought she was more likely to fall in love with the factotum, Worthy, seeing as she spent more time with him.
Contrary to being praised by devoted readers, the hero was immoral or should I say amoral. For example, he had no qualms about sleeping with other men's wives. I found myself cheering for "crazy woman", his ex-mistress, whom he casts aside. She keeps popping up to make his and the heroine's life a living hell. In my opinion, I agree with the ex-mistress' husband - he got what he deserved and more. I disliked the so-called hero so much I was cheering for the villainess who was pretty bad. I would have passed this one over if I wasn't so bored and desperate to read almost anything at the time.

Sara Fielding is a young author who likes to write about the seedier side of life; the gambling, prostitutes and thieves. Out one night researching her subsequent book in a bad part of town she rescues notorious gambling house owner, Derek Craven, when he is being attacked by two men.
Derek Craven was born and then left abandoned in a drainage ditch. Raised by a handful of prostitutes, he is no stranger to the side of life that Sara is researching or writing about. He reluctantly allows her acess to his club, which is usually restricted to mostly men, for research purposes and becomes smitten with her. However, she is probably the most genuine lady he has ever met, and as such feels he is unworthy of her.
Although Sara is as sweet as she is innocent, she is also not a doormat. She is a strong and compassionate heroine who is also amazingly resourceful. She wasn't whiny or simpering, she was intelligent and fun. Derek has struggled to rise above his upbringing, he has never fully accepted that he is better than the gutter from which he came. He has multiple layers to his complicated personality, making him an intriguing and commanding lead. Together they compliment each other perfectly, two very different people who make a fabulous couple.
This is one of my sister's all time favorite historicals and she finally strong armed me into reading it. After enjoying it so much, I am sorry I waited so long to read this book, it easily became one of my favorites. There are challenges and obstacles right up into the end that make this book a page turner. What I liked most about this book is usually as soon as the happily ever after happens, the book is over. That is not the case with this story, instead we get a rare glimpse into the 'after' of the happily ever after. This was a wonderful book and I am sure I will revisit the characters again. Enjoy!
