Although interesting, I found this book to be useless. I'm taking a class of American History from 1492 - 1877. There is a lot of information to cover (rightly so. A lot of stuff happened.) This book is used as a supplement for lectures, but it is so highly specific, it bears no relevance on the class as a whole. We cover the French and Indian War in a 50 minute lecture, but then I spend another 50 minutes reading about toasting customs in early America. It seems like this book threw a dart at each interval of time, a picked a random topic to discuss. Fun to read and very interesting, but I could go without it and not notice.

Book was not in as good shape as described. Still useable, but I don't really like it.

Rather than a secondary account of history, the Bedford Reader provides material from that era, and guides the reader in drawing their own conclusions. It can help teach a student how to do research THEMSELVES and interpret the data they find, rather than relying on what's told to them by textbooks and the internet.
Chapters contain: Notes from archaeological digs, colonial and slave diary entries, minutes from Constitutional debates, newspaper clippings and advertisements, popular toast songs of the revolution, and so much more.
