As a personal trainer I have tried just about every kind of workout you can imagine. The twelve week workout offered in the back of the book makes for a terrific exercise, while also teaching one the basics of hand to hand Krav Maga. I am also a student of mixed martial arts and these techniques have helped me to feel much more confident in my fighting skills. The philosophy and origins of Krav Maga are also explained in detail, helping one to better appreciate the combat system. I was very pleased with the book as an introduction to Krav Maga.

This book might have some value for those who have never attended a single class in any martial art.*
There are much better books on the basics of punching and kicking however.
View it online and review the Table of Contents -- the very first four chapters or more are history, philosophy, why the author likes Krav etc. This information can be summarized in a few pages or found free on the Internet.
The subsequent few chapters are literally how to perform each simple strike or kick -- good enough, but hardly the specific to Krav. I could even find examples (might have missed the tree for the forest) the explanation of an Block/Attack at the same time -- an essential of Krav.
* For a raw beginner it might be a 2 or 2 1/2 stars, but:
Save your money, buy a better "self-defense" or "intro to martial arts" book if you are a beginner -- buy a "real Krav" book if you are experienced and want to really learn Krav.
I am extremely glad that I read this in the book store (I am a speed reader), rather than paying money for it.

I've been doing Krav for about 3 months. This book is a nice overview but it cannot compare to a real class. If you've never tried Krav, I would recommend this book as an introduction. If you've already tried Krav, you won't learn much from this book.

I must start with the statement that I really like the book. The writing is generally very clear. The fundamentals are covered well. I would have given 5 stars if it was not for a couple short comings. 1)The only photos are of Dave posing! The techniques are illustrated with drawings.(low budget feel)
2)The history is interesting, but ... I'm not really counting pages here but it seemed like half the book. I'm more interested in defensive tactics than historical anecdotes or apocryphal tales of Krav Maga saving the day! Give me more techniques and real, detailed, accounts of true incidents! Please forgive the sarcasm it's one of my major faults. I like the book very much. I am doing the workout and... yup I'm sore!
EVERYWHERE!
Nothing is perfect when viewed from the jaundiced eye, but if you want a good workout and good info on proper form and some viable techniques for self defense, you cant do too much better as a very first step. It won't make you an I.D.F. commando but it's a good starting place to introduce you to a valid , modern system.

I personally found this book by complete accident a friend of mine in college was extremely worried about having to walk around campus at night alone, which I thought was a disgrace. I decided to teach her some combative type training but all I have ever used was a karate based system that was a trade off style of fighting. So at Barnes and Nobles I came upon this book compared it to all the others in the self-defense section and decided it would provide the easiest moves to learn that would give her confidence she could protect herself. Then when I got home and read it I decided that I should begin to practice it myself as well since it made sense the way David portrays the discipline. Plus as an added bonus David has to be the very first author I have ever emailed and gotten as warm a response as his. He was very friendly and admitted that do to constraints on time he limited the book to beginning information only but it is a good start for those who are interested in an exciting new emerging discipline for self-defense.
