This is a book I recommend to virtually every person I meet. It was a required reading for a course that I took in college but the short stories and personal reflections in it are not only amazing but incredibly tearful, at times.
The authors, or moreover, individuals compiling the book, take you on a journey through a variety of topics. A young girl converting to Christianity and dismissive of her American Indian heritage. A woman's journey as a lesbian teacher. Does white privilege exist and how do you notice it? Why are people resistant to change? What does it mean to be transgendered and how does it affect someone's life? How does it feel to be grey surrounded by whites and vice versa? Do people change their persona's to "fit in?" What issues do specific economic classes face? How have women struggled for equality? Why are men desensitized? Why are people so unwilling to understand other cultures? The list here goes on and on.
This book changed my life and the way I view the world around me in so many ways to the point I feel that humanities courses should be taught from the beginning of a child's life. If you're buying this for a course in college, keep this book and know that this is probably one of the most important purchases you'll make.
