Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - i'll pass
I was extremely dissapointed in this book. I was bored and annoy by the main character. the heroine was dull and the guy lack passion. The couple was just plain dull.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Thoroughly enjoyable read!
If I could I would give this book 4 1/2 stars ,but, Amazon won't let you. One reason I rated this book so high is because I simply enjoyed it immensely and read it rather quickly. When a book captivates me wholeheartedly then it's a winner for me. When a book holds my attention this well I tend to rate it pretty high and I don't critique every single, tiny little aspect of it. While enjoying a book this much it is also very hard to understand when others don't share that opinion ,but, that is what makes us all different and you just can't please everyone. I won't go into the actual story much as some others did so already. I was pretty enthralled in the story from the beginning. I hesitantly admit I related to the heroine in a way that maybe some other readers can't. My own father was extremely verbally abusive, somewhat physically abusive, very unnuturing, and very angry most of the time and I grew up basically afraid of him (and of men in general) and very insecure. He didn't treat my mother very well at all (to say the very least) and most all of us 7 children ,but, the two boys were the exception..they were treated better..much better and with at least some respect. So being shy and afraid of men was a given, however, being very defensive and seem rebellish was also something that crept in often but it is a way of surviving and you do what you have to and so did Catherine...she was a true survivior in every sense. You learn to put up your guard and you do this often just to protect yourself when underneath lies a pretty frightened and fearful person who hates crowds, loud noises, lots of commotion, and people you aren't sure you can trust so you basically trust very few....exept those few close and faithful friends around you. So all that being said I could really empathize with Catherine on a particular level. She was a very complex person and what I liked of the hero Quint (the true hero of the story) was that he gave her time in figuring her out and he had a lot of patience even if some of his reasons were not completely noble ,but, for some of his own ambitions. Perhaps that patience existed because he felt something for her from the beginning (you knew that) although he didn't want to admit it because he was afraid it could interfere with his political aspirations. I can't help it either that I love it when there are secondary characters like Josie, Madeline, and Ashley who didn't fully understand everything Catherine went through ,but, loved her and supported her anyway..they knew her father did not treat her well ,but, didn't fully understand the extent of the damage it had done her. They each had their own individuality and spunkiness and it only adds to the story their presence in it. Thank goodness she had them to lean on. Their presence also added some welcomed humour to the story. I also had a little sister that Lizzy reminded me very much of. The story went at a very good pace and I was never, not for one minute, bored. I think as readers we should care for the main characters and Ms. Galen succeeded at aiding me to do just that. I also fell in love with her hero and a hero who also exemplified the meaning of the word for me. All this being said I only really had one problem with the book and it was near the end. I wanted there to be some sort of better resolution between Catherine and her family and I wanted some sort of answer as to why her father was the way he was, treated her the way he did, and I thought that was all wrapped up a bit too quickly and without much satisfaction. I also thought that Catherine would discover that her little sister Lizzy had somewhat taken her place in her fathers assualts on her. He started treating Lizze pretty bad and I thought possibly that the author would somehow be able to bring the two sisters together and let them find peace between each other. But that didn't happen either so we are left with the idea that things just went on as they did with Catherine never seeing her mother again or her sister and them all hating her. I wish some of all that hurting could have ended and some healing take place because it was needed. But perhaps that isn't so realistic....you can't wrap all that up in a pretty package because that really isn't the way it would be would it? But this is a fiction story and one can hope. Nonetheless, I still loved this story, was totally captivated, and because I had also read two other books by Ms. Galen that I also adored I won't hesitate to put her on my autobuy list. I have yet to be disappointed and I think her writing can only improve. I think it is pretty great now. This one is a keeper for me. I enjoyed it very much and would encourage many to read it.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - surprisingly, I liked this book
Once I decided to ignore the ridiculous amount of anachronisms ("I'm okay, Daddy." - from a woman of the ton in 1800's England, right...) I started to enjoy this book. Especially when the mousey/over-the-top heroine dragged her vicious little sister to the bushes during a ball, tied her up, and gagged her so that she could warn her fiance that he is marrying a shrew. It was funny.

I am a bit tired of reading "politically correct" heroines. This book was refreshing; no scene predictable. The hero was the sweetest guy. The heroine's friends were great. What's not to like? So she wrote the book in "American"... Once I got over that, I didn't mind.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Read in one night!
It's pretty rare that I read a book-- even a light romance novel--in one night. So imagine my surprise when I not only read this book in one sitting, but I started it at around 11 at night and didn't put it down until I finished it in the wee hours of the morning! I love when I get so engaged in a book and I cherish when that happens. It was such an unexpected treat because I picked it randomly off the shelf at a bookstore one evening when I needed to pass the time.I'd never heard of Galen before, but I'm so glad I took a chance. She is now definitely one of the authors I'll watch for her new stuff. I'm disappointed to see that the other books in this series aren't written yet. I'm ready for the subsequent one! Loved the hero (although I agree that it took him awhile to figure out she wasn't a schemer)and the story was just so so sweet (without being syrupy and eye-roll inducing). At times the heroine annoyed me a little because I think she was a bit difficult, but her background was more than enough reason for that and so it didn't bother me too much. I loved her relationship with her cousins and can't wait to read their stories! I agree with another reviewer-- if you like Lisa Kleypas, in particular the Wallflower series, I think you're going to love this one.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Believable and Good Story
This is the very first in a series of four books based on four young cousins who vow never to marry when they grow up and so they call themselves the "Spinsters Club". I don't understand one of the other reviewers who said this story was unbelievable because I thought the author did a great story explaining the abuse behind the behavior.

Catherine Fulbright is the daughter of a noble family's second son. Her father is bitter because he never had any sons and he did not inherit his brother's, the Earl, wealth. He is a physically and mentally abusive alcoholic and takes out the brunt of his anger on his daughter Catherine "Catie". He allows his other daughter the hateful and cruel Elizabeth to join in the abuse. In his mind, at least he can marry the petite, pretty blond Elizabeth to a nobleman and reap financially from her match. One of their favorite abuses is to lock Catie in a closet under the stairs for days in the dark. A now adult Catie is terrified of crowds and crowded spaces as a result. Catie's old fashioned father decides that in order to marry off his younger daughter he must very first find Catie a husband. Catie is terrified of men and vows that she will not marry. When Elizabeth becomes bethrothed to Quint- Lord Valentine, Catie is determined to scare off the groom to keep herself free of a potential match. Her cousins promise to help her prove Elizabeth's true mean, selfish nature.

Quint knows he needs a wife to help him politically. Petite, pretty Elizabeth seems a good choice and his betrothal is announced. When Quint meets Elizabeth's sister Catie he is surprised by his attraction to her. She is a tall brunette, not the normal petite blond he favors. Also, she is a shrewish woman who takes every oppurtunity to badmouth her sweet sister. When Catie's father plots to further his own agenda, Quint is tricked into marrying Catie. Quint finds out he doesn't really mind and is actually happy to have Catie as his wife, but she must be able to help him further his political career. He discovers the abuse that Catie endured and vows to bring his wife out of her shell. What follows is Catie's struggles between fear of men and her desire to be happy with her husband and marriage.

This book is delightful...serious when it needs to be and amusing in the appropriate places. Good series, great book.
