Who will be the last man standing?

New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander's delicious series about four men desperately trying to avoid matrimony continues...

Lady Cordelia Bannister simply cannot marry a man she has not chosen herself, no matter what her father decrees. So, pretending to be her own companion, she decides to seek out information about her intended by meeting with his secretary—a man who soon beguiles her. But Lady Cordelia doesn't know the truth—the man can't resist is really her intended, Daniel Sinclair.

Daniel has nearly won the wager he made with three of London's most eligible bachelors. While two of his compatriots have surrendered to the shackles of marriage, he's remained free to woo any woman he chooses. Yet duty forces him to consider Lady Cordelia, so, determined to find a way to escape honor intact, he continues the masquerade he started.

Each finds the other completely irresistible, but when they uncover their mutual mistaken identities, Daniel and Cordelia must make the most important choice of all...

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A Fine Little Romantic Farce
American Daniel Sinclair, one of the men who have wagered that they will not marry finds himself in just such a position due to his father's machinations. The same goes for Lady Cordelia, her father has affianced her to Daniel and she wants no part of a marriage with a man she has never even met.

Cordelia, who is impetuous and a little too cute for her own good, sets out to meet Daniel Sinclair but she has to make sure that he does not know about her inquiries. She hits upon the perfect plan. She will find out about Daniel through his Secretary Warren Lewis, but she will pretend to be her cousin, who is also her companion. She mistakenly believes Daniel is Mr. Lewis and Daniel believes that Cordelia is her cousin and viola they begin to really like each other as they pump one another for information about the other.

This really is a nice little comedy. Daniel was so charming and Cordelia tries to be cool and aloof but she finds Daniel totally engaging. Furthermore she believes that their flirtation is harmless since she believes him to be someone other than her fiancé. Things spin out of hand when they both become too attached to the other and wonder how they can break it off with their fiancé and be with each other not knowing they already are with the one they love. I liked this premise however it went on a little too long and Cordelia was a bit stuffy toward the end but all and all a very nice read.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Fun and engaging.
Set in London, 1854. Four men, totally opposed to marriage made a bet. The last man standing gets a bottle of special cognac and a small amount of money. In only four months since the wager was made, two of the men are happily married. The two men remaining are Oliver Leighton, the Earl of Norcroft, and Daniel Sinclair, the American entrepreneur.

Lady Cordelia Bannister is the last unwed daughter of the Earl of Marsham. Cordelia is nearing the age of twenty-six and has yet to find a man she loves. Three men have proposed to her and, for various reasons of her own, all three men were politely turned down. But now her father has presumptuously arranged for Cordelia to wed Daniel Sinclair, a man she has never even met. If Cordelia declines, the family's finances will be is serious trouble. Lord Marsham owns a rather impressive shipping line. Harold, Daniel's father, wants to merge the shipping line with his own steamship interests. This would give Harold an entree into Europe's area.

Cordelia decides to learn all she can about Daniel to see if they would get along well or if she should somehow bow out of the whole thing. To do this, Cordelia pretends to be Sarah, her companion/cousin. She then lies in wait for Daniel's secretary, Warren, to appear for his daily walk and approaches him.

Daniel is startled when the lovely lady mistakes him for Warren and approaches him to ask detailed questions about "his employer". Yet Daniel jumps at the chance to learn more about Cordelia. Daniel believes that he may learn what Cordelia does not like and then pretend to be all she hates. If Cordelia backed out of the marriage proposal, then his father could not force him to walk down the wedding aisle. But neither Daniel, nor Cordelia, expected to really like the false people they pretended to be. Both believe that a confession would make the other hate him or her. Yet sooner-or-later, the real Daniel and Cordelia must meet face-to-face.

***** A hilarious story of mistaken identities blended with a romance that only Victoria Alexander could possibly pull off so well. I found myself thoroughly amused throughout the entire book. PERFECT reading during a long rode trip, on vacation, or just to cheer you up on a lonely day. BRAVA! *****

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Long and tedious
I have read many of Victoria Alexander's books and this might be my last one. The mistaken identity went around in circles it was ridiculous. In the end, I wound up disliking the 2 main characters and wished that Daniel would just go back to America without Cordelia.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Tedious
Normally, I like Victoria Alexander. However, I found both the plot and the characters tedious in this novel. First, there was never any real conflict in the book. If the characters would have been honest with one another, the story would have been over after the very first couple of chapters. In fact, the only story line in the book was the somewhat overused "mistaken identity" plot, although taken to new limits. First, they both were mistaken about one another's identity. Then, he found out the truth about her identity but chose not to confront her with it. After that, she discovers the truth about him and that he also knew the truth about her, but decides to keep playing the charade anyway. It was dragged out to the point of ridiculousness, and I thought that both characters were extremely immature.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - My introduction to romance novels
This is the very first romance novel, beside the incomparable Jane Austen, whose books, all of them, I have read, that I could not put down. I've tried to read other romance a few other times, but the quality has just not been there. This one was excellent, and I just had to finish and find out what happens. The characters are quite believable, and you really start to care what happens to them. It may not be up to the level of Jane Austen, but that's to be expected.

I will be reading more Victoria Alexander in the near future.
