Product Description:

Amelia Willoughby has been engaged to the Duke of Wyndham for as long as she can remember. Literally. A mere six months old when the contracts were signed, she has spent the rest of her life waiting. And waiting. And waiting . . . for Thomas Cavendish, the oh-so-lofty duke, to finally get around to marrying her. But as she watches him from afar, she has a sneaking suspicion that he never thinks about her at all . . .

It's true. He doesn't. Thomas rather likes having a fiancée—all the better to keep the husband-hunters at bay—and he does intend to marry her . . . eventually. But just when he begins to realize that his bride might be something more than convenient, Thomas's world is rocked by the arrival of his long-lost cousin, who may or may not be the true Duke of Wyndham. And if Thomas is not the duke, then he's not engaged to Amelia. Which is the cruelest joke of all, because this arrogant and illustrious duke has made the mistake of falling in love . . . with his own fiancée!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Enjoyable but the same book as Two Dukes
I enjoyed this but this appears to be the same book at Ms. Quinn's other book, Two Dukes. The characters are better developed than in a lot of these historical novels, the characters don't only dress in period but seem to observe a bit more of the propriety of the times while making the women independent in thought for their time period. And, of course, the romance is actually out of step with the era but we wouldn't enjoy them nearly as much if they only kissed a lady's hand and admired her across the room or if all conversations were entirely appropriate.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Liked it more than the first
I have enjoyed many of Julia Quinn's previous works (Romancing Mr. Bridgerton and When He Was Wicked are my favorites) but did not like this one as much as some of her previous novels. I had been looking forward to Thomas and Amelia's story but, like others, I was disappointed by how much of this novel had already been covered in The Lost Duke of Wyndham; a novel whose hero I did not particularly care for - which is probably what caused some of the overlapping bits of this book to be even more unejoyable for me.

I gave this book three stars because I did enjoy its premise and, taken by themselves, I liked the hero and heroine and was more invested in their situation than I was with Grace and Jack's in the Lost Duke of Wyndam. I thought Quinn did a good job of portraying Thomas and Amelia's inner struggles and I bought their thought processes and emotions as realistic to the situation. And I was definitely invested enough to root for their happy ending.

So, basically, while I appreciate Quinn's endeavor to tell a simultaneous (and in my opinion more poignant) story and provide readers with the point of view of the other couple affected by the duke drama, I would have preferred a story that lived less in the shadow of the previous book and was more Thomas and Amelia's own.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Very Dissapointed
I was all excited to read "Mr Cavendish". I for one liked Thomas in "The Lost Duke." I actually liked him better than Jack. I felt he had more honor in his little finger than Jack did at all. I found the book at borders 2 weeks before it actually came out. I started skimming it and realized that it was an exact match to the very first one. I proceeded to flip to the epilogue and read it, laughed because it was amusing, and then put it back on the shelf.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Just a bit boring...
As otherers have stated, reading the very first book is detrimental to enjoying this one. I did A LOT of skimming and eventually gave up really reading and skimmed the last 1/4th of the book. I liked the leads well enough, but they're a little luke-warm. I guess I prefer romances where the leads fall in love early in their relationship. I don't really appreciate the whole knowing each other for years before suddenly seeing each other differently thing. Quinn did this with one of the Bridgerton books, the one with Colin, and I much prefer that book because their was some spark between the characters. It was still one of my least fav of that series, so liking it better isn't saying much. Also, I don't remember everything from the very first book. How does the former Duke make a living. While reading it, I found I cared a lot more about him not being cheated out of the properties his mother had brought to the Dukedom than the actual love story and wondering about that is the only reason I finished it. I just got bored. Anyway, they probably addressed it in the very first one, but they make no mention in this one of how they make their living. Does anyone reemember?

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Two major issues with this novel
I love Julia Quinn, but this was simply not her best work.

First off, there is far too much material recycled from the previous book. Conversations were verbatim and it seemed at times, so were descriptions. The feeling of deja-vu drew me out of the story too often, and I was bored.

Even more, the amount of time Thomas and Amelia had together was limited. By the time their relationship finally blossomed, the book was over. The epilogue wasn't even that good, or revealing about the progress the pair had made together. I spent the last five chapters hoping for some new interaction between the two. What interaction there was at the end felt hasty and unreal, and in my opinion was incredibly disappointing and almost laughable to see in print. Thomas and Amelia deserved better.

It was almost as though the author spent too much time focusing on simply making the story parallel to the previous book; romance and indpendent character development were afterthoughts, and I felt cheated. This novel simply lacked the magic I'm used to in Ms. Quinn's work. I've read all her novels several times over, and I will continue to do so...but I can't help being disappointed here.

If you read the The Lost Duke of Wyndham, I would suggest waiting a while before picking up its "sequel." Perhaps then the material will seem more enjoyable.
