Sorry to have been so late in reading this superbly written recap of events of that era. As one who lived through those times, I could never comprehend how any individual in the government who became ill would allow themselves to be taken to a government run hospital. The story of the death of Trotsky's son in a Paris hospital should warn any outstanding conservative about how vulnerable the sick person is. McCarthy was victimized by every machination of the internationalists who seized control of the Republican 1952 nomination through the Texas delegation where they falsely charged Taft-MacArthur with theft -- when it was they who did the stealing! The two greatest speeches at that convention were those of MacArthur and McCarthy -- they sure woke me up and ought to be revived. Anyway, Evans command of language is marvelous.
