I got this book back in November 2006. As like with a couple of other people I had problems with the binding but once I contacted John Peterson via email, I received a free new spiral bound copy. I have 8 children at home and they are always going through the book and it is still holding up. This book has changed my life as well as the lives of my family. We exercise almost everyday together using these exercises and we have a blast! I have gone from a 38 down to a 32. I am 47 years old and you can see the outline of my abs now. Also the forum on the website for this book is great. You get alot of advice and make alot of friends. Once you have the exercises down which aren't that difficult to learn it will change your life.

Probably the most comprehensive calisthenic book I've ever read. With that said, the binding to this book is cheap, real cheap! the pages easily separated from the binding. This should have been physically put together more professionally. Otherwise excellent content.

I've had this book for quite some time. Which is enough to point out the pros and cons I've found in the program by Peterson.
Pros
1) Apparently, the book shows many if not most of the exercises used by Charles Atlas and other famouse body-building dudes. So if you are looking for that, you'll find it in the book. Well, in fact the author explains how he began bodybuilding using the method of Charles Atlas and then he perfectioned it and developed what would be sort of his own style. But the essence is the same, using tension and bodyweight to develop muscles.
2) If you are into dynamic tension, bodyweight-bodybulidng, then you'll find a lot of info you might like.
3) The program includes a great variety of push ups that will keep you busy for quite a while.
4) Though some people didn't seem to like the zen approach and tone of the author I found it was sort of a nice bonus. Well, I do think he shouldn't make any comments about religion or God, but as he himself said it's his book and he will write what ever he wants to.
5) The author mentions some famous athletes that allegedly had sucess with some of the exercises. Obviously he talks about Charles Atlas and Liedermann, and Woody Strode among others. It was sort of inspiring to read about their stories. Though probably they are not the best and most convicing testimony (scientist and doctors have a better chance at persuading me than the myth of some famous athletes).
6) I liked the warm up part, the abdominal workout part, and the push ups part.
7) The book is spiral bound so it is quite easy to use as you work out.
8) There is some truth that if you follow the exercises you will feel how your muscles work out, and you will feel better than if you stay in the couch and in front of the tv. So, bodylifting is a better option than doing nothing at all.
9) The exercises are most of the time well explained and you'll find a picture for many of them. Though some exercises are only described and no picture is given and for other exercises you only get to see the picture but no explanation.
10) The guy is kind of likeable and nice.
Cons
1) A big problem is that the author does not explain if he is a doctor or scientist or what sort of qualification he has to back up the claims made in the book that bodylifting is better than weightlifting. At least I have read it many times and there is no such claim to my knowledge. Anyway what I did find was a disclaimer that the book is for educational purpouses and that it shouldn't be considered as "professional advice".
I thought there ought to be some page in the book that talked about his qualifications, but besides his mention of how he is very much into martial arts and that his uncle introduced him into bodybuilding there is no reference to a diploma o titles earned in sport science or as a medical doctor. Besides, he does not quote doctors or sports scientist to back his claims. He goes as far as saying that you should relay on your experience rather than what others say.
Well, the problem I see with that is that I don't want to conduct experiments with my body to find what works and what doesn't, specially knowing there is plenty evidence and info found out by countless scientists and sport specilists. If he doesn't quote experts (doctors or/and scientists) to back his claim as how the program works, then it is a big downer.
I'm starting to believe weight lifting is much more efficient than bodylifting.
2) The program itself can be a bit boring and I found results difficult to measure. Since you are basically applying pressure muscle against muscle there is not an objective way of finding out if you worked out more than yesterday or last week.
3) The stories of the athletes he talks about underline they got results MAINLY doing a lot of push ups. Yet many of the exercises in the book are about dynamic tension. So I think the author needs more testimonies backing up the use of dynamic tension.
4) The book constantly attacks weightlifting pointing out it is too easy to get an injury in weigthlifiting and also saying it is inefficient. I decided to find out if that was true. Guess what? There IS literature and science supporting weight-lifting as a good exercise to be in great health.
In fact, weight lifiting HAS a lot of science in it. It's almost the opposite to body-lifting. You actually have to study it with care to obtain results and avoid injuries. So, yes weight-lifting can injure you if you don't do it right. But so can happen if you don't walk right or eat right. You might fall, or a peanut can stuck in your troath if you don't chew correctly.
I have a book about weigth lifting that explains how it is a MYTH that you ... Read More

Got this book on a Wedensday. Finished it on the same day. It was an easy read. Lots of pictures and big type. Great pictures to illustrate the exercises. Good exercises. A lot of repetition though. Could have been half the size. The author is definitely in great shape and I will use a lot of the information to give it a real try. My main problem with this book is the binding fell apart on day one. I opened the book and the bottom of the pages started to come apart. Buy the time I was on Lesson 2, I had about a dozen loose pages. No big deal, but not what I'd expect from a book I just purchased either.
