Product Description:
Martin Easdown's compelling account of the German air raid on Folkestone in 1917 and its appalling aftermath is the very first comprehensive history of an episode to be published. He gives a dramatic description of the event, relying heavily on the eyewitness testimony from the townspeople who were there on that fateful day. He records the experiences of the German airmen who carried out the raid and pioneered a new and terrifying method of warfare. In addition, he recounts in graphic detail similar attacks by bombers, seaplanes and Zepplins on other Kentish towns, including Dover, Ramsgate, Margate and Sheerness.

A Glint in the Sky, by Martin Easdown with Thomas Genth, is a much needed study of German air attacks on British towns in the southeast county of Kent during the First World War.
Several raids are discussed in this small but remarkably complete book, with especially good coverage given to Folkestone, site of one of the largest raids and the highest number of civilian deaths from a single bomb during the war. An impressive collection of photographs augment contemporary personal collections and explanatory text.
Especially moving are the details concerning fatalities such as this: "CONSIDINE, Francis Henry; Age:5; Fatally injured in the head in Oaks Road, died in Shorncliffe Military Hospital the same day from shock. Buried in Shorncliffe Military Cemtery. His gravestone remains in excellent condition." Sometimes the fatality reports are surprising: "Son of Riley and Lucinda Arbuckle of Indiana, USA; fatally injured while pitching a tent on Risboro' Field."
The authors compliment each other's background well: Easdown is British; Genth is the grandson of Adolf Genth, a German airman who participated in the raids.
