Product Description:
From the award-winning author of the best books on puberty — A completely new book written especially for 8-11-year-old girls, playfully illustrated in an appealing, two-colour design.
Young girls before the onset of puberty have a curiosity about their soon-to-be changing bodies that needs addressing in a simpler way than for their older sisters. In the proven, trust-worthy, Madaras-friendly voice and style, this entirely new book now brings them the same kind of thoughtful, down-to-earth information—but at a reading and understanding level that's just right for them.
Responding throughout to real-life questions and observations from younger girls, Madaras explores the strange and thrilling changes that are happening, or about to happen, to them, including: the development of breasts, body hair, and body fat; the changes in their reproductive organs, both inside and out; their very first period and all the complex feelings surrounding it; the unwelcome appearance of acne and new body odors; and, perhaps most important, how to respect and celebrate their unique bodies, even when the outside world is not always so accepting.
Lively cartoon drawings throughout make the book not only helpful, but fun to read, too.

This book was purchased to start a discusion with my 9 year-old daughter about her body. I was shocked that this book was titled as a "Book for younger girls". The images and illustrations in this book are very unnecesary; girls sitting on the floor looking at their parts with a mirror, and bare chested girls talking about their periods!!! It had too much information on tampons and sex and I did not find it helpful at all. I'm still looking for a simple book to introduce my daughter to puberty.

I got this book for my 10 year old since she is wearing a bra and having some spotting. I wanted her to know why her body is changing and that she is just fine and not weird! This book is very positive and explains things very well. It does use specific terminology (vagina, vulva, etc) quite a bit. It also helps with the questions of being normal, starting early or late and addresses them by saying things like: "Your breasts will develop at the age that is just right for you" and "Puberty isn't always a piece of cake. Get the facts. Ask questions."
And as for the 'talk to your friends' complaint, on page 18 it says "You can read this book with your friends. Giggle. Ask how your friends feel about their changing bodies. Talk about how you feel." I don't see what is so wrong with that. Young and adult women talk to other women about our cycles all the time. And whats wrong with talking to your friends about something that is COMPLETELY NORMAL? Most of the books says to talk to your mom (I counted 7 talk to your mom statemetns just flipping through the book) Puberty is gonna happen sooner or later.....
It also addresses the social trends to be thin and chesty. I like the way the book talks about weight and dieting(and no need to do so) feeling too tall or too short or too fat, etc. Bottom line is we are all different and that is just fine.
P.S. I did not know anything about puberty when I got my very first period. I thought I was dying since there was blood in my underwear(thanks mom!) It's great that my daughter will know what is going on and not to worry!

I have twin 8yr old girls. Knowing puberty is on its way is important subject to be educated on. My girls like the book because it's an easy read and the book is pretty. Great product.

I'm eight! (My mom is helping me type this). And my whole body is changing! I've looked on the computer. It helped me a lot. My body is changing a lot but it is a little freaky. But I'm fine. Sports helped me calm down and made me feel better. So you should, too. You can understand why your body is changing and nothing will happen to you. You can see how everything changes in your body. It always helps to know what is going on. I found some great books on the computer and we looked a little inside of it. And now I know pretty much everything I need to know and its was really helpful. I always feel better when I look up and see what's going on around there. It has books about seeing what you have when you're going to have a baby and this helped me a lot so that's why I looked on the computer and you should too.
