The book was sort of slow. Not the usually Hannah Howell story and did not keep me captivated. Too many twist and turns that was not pleasing.

I get so upset when re-issues are not listed as such in the "Product Details" section. Since I've been burnt before by not checking out what is written subsequent to the "Publishing house:" line, I always check it now. But this book's page does not even state that "Re-ssue" detail! From the other reviews, it's quite obvious that this is not even a good read. So I won't be buying it! It's pretty stinky of a publisher to re-issue a poorly written book/story just because in the "Now" the author has attained a certain status. But to list the book as a newly released novel by only listing 2008 as the published year is downright criminal. COME ON AMAZON!!

I have read a few Hannah Howell books before, all of the highlander series, and I enjoyed them all. So I was eager to read this book. But I was very disappointed in it, mildly disgusted to say the least. I read about the very first 60 pages and lightly skimmed the rest of the book to see if it got any better. It didn't. The characters both seemed really interesting in the very first few pages. But then Sine and Gamel meet and Gamel is overcome by his attraction to Sine. He bulldozes over everything to roll in the hay with her, and gives her a choice between getting her hand chopped off because she's a thief or sleeping with him. Um, I'm sorry, but that is not a choice at all. It was about as close to rape as I think I have seen in a while. I absolutely hated how Gamel didn't care to give Sine choices at all. I realize in those times women didn't get many choices, but Gamel was overly insensitive and selfish, in my opinion. I also did not sense that Gamel cared about Sine at all other than to keep her locked up in his bedroom. I was disappointed in Gamel at best, at worst I wanted to punch him in the face for being such an a-hole.
I thought Sine might save the story for me and I thought she was an interesting character originally, but she also disappointed me. All the reasons for her to avoid Gamel were stupid, but she did not concern herself with the one reason that did matter- that Gamel was perpetually forcing her to do things for his own selfish gain. She didn't seem to care that he had no consideration for her as a human being, but she was just so overcome with hots for him. What crap. Give me a break!! If any guy, no matter how attractive, treats me like Gamel treated Sine, I'd tell him to get out of my face before he got an attitude adjustment!
Don't buy this book- another jerk hero with no honor in that he feels he owns his 'woman property', and another wimpy woman with no backbone who lets him order her around because he's sooo hot.

From the back cover-
For six years, Sine Catoriona Brodie has clung to a vow of vengeance. A pickpocket and street performer by trade, Sine bides her time until she can defeat her treacherous kinsman. Nothing will sway her form her path, not even Gamel Logan -a tall, lean knight whose hungry gaze and heated embrace stir a longing that is both delicious and distracting.
From his very first glimpse of her at a roadside camp, Gamel knows that Sine, with her violet eyes and hair like silken moonlight, is the soul mate he has sought. Yet Sine insists she belongs to another man, though her eager response to his seduction belies her every word. Gamel pledges to help Sine win back her lands from a cunning enemy, but the greater battle will be convincing her to conquer her past and trust in his enduring love.....
This is one of Howell's earlier books before her 'Highland' series. Those, as well as this one, are not to be confused with her new paranormal series. Silver Flame is a conventional historical romance, well written but for me an average read. I think that Sine and Gamel (don't care for that name -really unsexy) got together too quickly. I'm not generally against love-at-first-sight scenarios but the lack of buildup in this book is a bit disappointing. And Gamel's man-handling in the beginning bothered me a bit, as did Sine's falling into his bed. The revenge plot was far more interesting. Howell really knows how to write some vile villains -these are no exceptions. Thats what kept me glued to the second half of the book when the romance was too predictable. There isn't much to be said about the secondary characters. They were OK but didn't have me engaged enough to be furiously searching for sequels.
A lukewarm read because the romance wasn't that enticing after the very first 100 pages. And since I don't read romantic fiction for the action/revenge/blackmail etc plots (no matter how good) I'd say pick this one up at the library instead. A solid Howell historical romance. Just not that entertaining compared her other books.
Some of my favorites of hers are:
Highland Bride (Zebra Historical Romance)
Highland Groom (Zebra Historical Romance)
