Product Description:
From acclaimed author Jen Holling comes the captivating and sensual story of Deidra MacKay, a reluctant witch who would do anything to give up her powers -- until she meets a darkly handsome man who may give her reason to use them...
A fiery witch able to communicate with animals, Deidra MacKay longs to relinquish her powers -- they bring her nothing but misfortune and danger. So when she learns that years ago, her ancestors signed a blood pact with a vampire, cursing the MacKay clan with witchcraft, she presumes that a member of the undead can also take her magic away. So she embarks on a quest to find the one who can hopefully ease her misery.
An embittered and crippled Scotsman, Stephen Ross lives as a recluse -- hiding from the world in a dreary castle. But when the intriguing and adorable Deidra arrives at his door hoping he is a vampire, he is intoxicated and aroused by her company. He joins her on her journey, hoping a vampire's magic might also heal his wounds -- and soon finds himself enraptured in the heat of passion with Deidra, an affair that could put both their lives at stake.

I am a big reader of Paranormal Romances and this one looked to be a good read. That is until I read it. Really slow paced. I had to force myself to get through this book. I've never read this author before so I don't know if she usually writes this way. The cover of the book is very misleading. The vampire thing is minimal at best in this story and then is really only discussed at the end. It's a story about a woman named Deidre with the power to speak to animals who is too scared to embrace her gift, and a man named Stephen who is crippled and wants to be whole. The journey they go through is really uneventful. Yes, they go through trials, but it leaves much to be desired. I had a hard time with the characters and story being believable. I was so disappointed. Great cover though! This is one I'll probably put in my "sell" pile.

This is a somewhat unusual read for me, and I really did not know what to expect, however, I did enjoy it. The realism of the Scottish setting and the witchs and witch hunter seemed very likely. The only thing, is that to this author they are real. Therefore to you the reader they are real. It is somewhat a romance, somewhat a horror story and somewhat a paranormal.
It treats blood-witches like regular witches. Different but entertaining, I will be on the lookout for the subsequent in the trilogy, IMMORTAL PROMISE.
Deidra MacKay is from a witch family, her psychic power is to talk to animals. She is frightened by the power and wants to loose it. When her father tells her that the family fable says a blood witch gave them their powers she sets out to find one to undo her unwanted gift.
Stephen Ross is a highland laird who was injured in battle and has a bad injury to his back, causing him to withdraw from the world and live a life of lonliness in his mountain castle. Deidra thinks that he is a blood-witch and sneaks away from her family to find him.
Luthias is a witch hunter, he travels the highlands finding and burning witches. He considers Deidra's step-mother and father, gifted in healing, to be good witchs. But he has always thought Deidra was a bad witch and when she leaves home he finds his chance to hunt her down and destroy her.
Stephen and Deidra find a place in each others heart, both feel like loners. Stephen decides to go to the blood-witch and see if she can heal his back. Deidra'a uncle Drake knows where a blood-witch lives.
I found the story quite different from other books about vampires and I did enjoy the story. Some things were abit hard to take but it really is written in a unique way.

I got pulled into this book from the very beginning and could not put it down. Deidra and Stephen's journey is captivating and fast paced. The relationship between them is believable and very well written - hot! I like that Deidra was a witch but not the usual spell caster or healer. The idea that she can communicate with animals is unique and sets this book apart. Not to mention that Stephen is not your usual hero but boy is he sexy. The ending of the book was freeing and exhilarating. I can't wait for Drake's story!

This was a very disapointing continuation to the highladers trilogy. there was no connection between characters, who knew each other, and there was no explanation about the world they were entering. they just found a vampire and then became vampires?? it just doesn't follow. how is that romantic and better then what they had?? are vampires not hunted? Jen holling also kept downing the hero. He was a great hero but for some reason that wasn't enough, he wasn't a real hero until he was a vampire? I was greatly disapointed in this book it was not the Jen Holling i have been reading and am a fan of.
