Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Heeeeeeere, fishy fishy fishy. Nice fishy...
To start with, this is a really strange comic book. It is about the adventures of Inspector Gill. He is a fish. He is a policeman in a world full of fish. Fish fish fish fish fish. He is a fish with a yen for booze and a pair of legs, which none of the other fish understand, since they have no idea what legs ARE. ('"Ankles", my lord?' 'Skip it.') Furthermore, this underwater world is filled to the brim with things that should not even be able to exist in an underwater world. Fish smoke cigars, drink beer, eat soup, light candles, and do all manner of other things that should be impossible. Gill seems to be the only person who realizes this. ('If we're underwater, how come the beer stays IN the mug?')
All the wierdness aside, however, this is a real great read. The underwateriness of it all is depicted perfectly - for instance, whenever a character moves through the water, they leave a little 'swish' of current instead of a speed line; and any loud outburst or wild burst of motion is sure to result in a large amount of little bubbles. The characters are interesting and engaging - Gill himself, who remains sympathetic despite his crankiness and drunken buffoonery, Oscar the Octopus, a mysterious little guy who follows people around and warns them about things in a blue-collar accent, Hook, the villain, along with his servant, Line, and his strange little pet, Sinker (who communicates through one word: 'Bah!'), Blophish the long-suffering butler and many others. The constant scheming and changing of alliances, the snappy verbiage, and Gill's obsession with the mysterious drug in the title all make for a pretty cool little plot, and make 'Hairballs' a very worthwhile addition to your collection.
The one thing that I didn't like, however, was that I could not figure out whether this was the BEGINNING of a saga or something in the middle of it. If it's the former, where can I find the subsequent volumes, and if it's the latter, where can I find the beginning? It's all very annoying. Oh, well.
