Web of Murder is a very short novel. In it, author Harry Whittington attempts to describe one man's descent into a hellish nightmare brought on by his belief that society's rules do not apply to him. Charley Brower is a successful attorney, married to a rich woman he happens to despise. He devises a foolproof plan to rid himself of his wife, get his hands on her money and live happily ever after with his very desirable secretary. But just as in James M. Cain's Double Indemity, the perfect crime proves to be anything but. As the reader watches, Mr. Brower's once enviable life undergoes an unstoppable downward spiral so relentlessly complete that, by story's end, death would be a welcome relief.
A nice idea for a pulp fiction crime novel to be sure. Unfortunately, Whittington's execution falls short of his concept. Too many flimsy plot devices, too little in the way of character developement and a paucity of descriptive detail all contribute to Web of Murder's failure to live up to its potential. Compare this book to Soft Touch, a similarly themed novel by John D. MacDonald. The contrast between the two 1950s pulp works is a stark one with Web of Murder paling by comparison.
Bottom line: Web of Murder flunks the test of time. A 3 star effort of historical interest only.

It's a shame that this book is out of print because as most of the grey lizard crime books it's excellent. A smooth lawyer plots to murder his wife, run away with his secretary, and maintain his innocence. If you liked Double Indemnity I would recommend searching for this one.
