This was the very first book I've read from Ms. Ashley. I enjoyed this book because I enjoyed the general story line. I'm only giving out a warning (NOT a spoiler) to those who might have a problem with a few things, like I did. This book is heavy with witchcraft. Spells, talismans, curses, mind reading, fortune telling, and the like. The heroine herself is a witch. I know some don't have a problem with those things, but I'm putting it out there for those who do. I wouldn't have read it if I'd known it was so heavy with witchcraft.

I read it from cover to cover in one sitting (well, I did stop for food from time to time) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Karen Moning's books. I read this book a month ago and I now routinely try to rate books so I don't forget that I've already read a book.
I thought that since it included a highlander and some "paranormal" stuff, it would be comparable to Moning. It's not. Where I think Moning's highlander series would all commend A ratings, this one gets a C+ because I didn't write down the author's name to remind myself later that I should read more from this author.
This wasn't a page-turner, but I don't think it was so bad that I had to stop reading. It just isn't memorable enough to stay in my library.
This book could be improved with the use of exploding gnomes, one-legged fairies, or a walking-talking Babar-type elephant.

Princess Zarabeth of Nvengaria is in danger and her father arranges for her to travel from her central European home to the Highlands of Scotland to stay with Egan MacDonald, a friend. Zarabeth is sent with three guards to protect her but as she arrives in Scotland her ship is wrecked and she is rescued by Egan. As she returns to Egan's remote castle she and Egan begin to reacquaint themselves with each other.
Zarabeth has loved Egan since she very first met him, aged twelve, five years before. Unfortunately he rejected her advances and she ended up being married to the unpleasant Duke Sebastian. Her divorce is proceeding but Zarabeth finds Egan still seems reluctant to open his hear to her. Zarabeth is a witch and has some skills but none of her attempts to turn Egan to her seem to be working.
As Egan tries to keep Zarabeth safe whilst not dishonouring the daughter of his friend, others are plotting against the ruler of Nvengaria and against Zarabeth herself. Is the strange logosh, a part-demon, part-wolf and part-man creature accompanying Zarabeth, some kind of traitor? Can Egan overcome his feelings of guilt over his brother's death? Can he be satisfied living as laird in the Highlands? Can the curse on his family be broken by Zarabeth?
Most of this book is a standard highland historical romance with a rough-spoken, kilt-wearing, sword-wielding highlander and a young and delicate woman. The paranormal aspect - Zarabeth's ability to read some people's thoughts, the curse, the logosh - seem in some ways to be an unnecessary distraction to this story. I didn't find the paranormal aspect particularly interesting and I also found the interactions between Zarabeth and Egan lacked depth. Somehow, despite reading a great deal about Egan and his life, I didn't feel I really understood his character. Zarabeth, too, had some nebulousness about her - her main interactions with Egan seemed to be wanting to find out what, if anything, he wore under his kilt. There is a side romance between Egan's sister and another character which added some interest but which is presumably going to be the focus of a future story. The rest of this tale was easy enough reading but also rather unsatisfying.

Jennifer Ashley continues her wonderful Nvengaria series with Highlander Everafter. Ten years earlier Zarabeth found Egan McDonald in a ditch in Nvenaria. She was only twelve and he twenty five but she knew she loved him and wanted to marry him. Egan, however, left her six years later when she tried to seduce him. He thought he was unworthy of her.
Now Zarabeth desperately needs his help as she is running from her abusive and traitorous husband. She flees to Scotland and is embraced by Egan's large clan. Egan is at odds with his feelings for Zarabeth. He still feels unworthy of her. Zarabeth is still in love with the big Scot and is determined to at least engage in an affair.
Egan's family adds a nice backdrop to this story. The secondary characters have fleshed out personalities although I did get some people mixed up at first. Egan's family is desperate for him to marry so the line can be carried on and they want him settled at the castle. He left for years under the crushing weight of his younger brother's death during the war. His father accused him of not taking better care of his brother and causing his death.
Zarabeth can read minds but it really does not come to play that much in the story other than her uncanny ability not to be able to read Egan's mind. This is ultimately a story about finding lost love. Egan and Zarabeth have a passionate and in many ways honorable romance. Zarabeth is kind, considerate but wears a mask thanks to husband's cruelty. Egan's feelings toward her are both protective and loving but tempered with a need for his own self preservation. He will risk everything though to make sure that Zarabeth is safe from enemies of Nvengaria.
