Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - anyone's son
I lived through this tragic story since the DeLaRoche's were neighbors of mine and I served in several local organizations with Harry Sr. and Mary Jane. As a reporter /photographer for a local newspaper I was on the scene from the time the police call went out working alongside local and NYC media, nonestop, until the funeral procession left the church. The police officer who found Ronnie was crying as he left the house. I won a First Prize NJ Press Assn. ward for hard news for my coverage of this story and several of my photos are in Roberta Roesch's book. There is no doubt Harry commited these murders, but why? Outwardly they were your typical small town closely knit family, not the dictatorial parents as many have said they were.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - I consider Harry de la Roche jr. innocent
The book titled anyone's son is one i feel everyone who dwells and belong to a society should read and i give a thumb up for the author, Roberta. Though i read the book sometime in august,2004, 28 years after the ugly incident occured in the De la Roche residence, i felt so immersed in the book and pitiful for the poor boy,Harry jr. that words can't tell. According to my view i consider Harry jr. innocent on this case and Ronie guilty if he was alive during the trial.Harry jr. may only be considered guilty with insanity for killing his brother, Ronie.
I don't know if Harry jr. is still alive in prison or the outside world. I'll like to know what went on later after the last page of Anyone's son. I'm making this review as of Septembre 27,2004 and i feel this day is Harry jr.'s birthday, Happy Birthday to you Harry!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Harry is innocent
I read this book back in 1979 when it was very first released and have been in contact with Harry every since, tho not as often now as before but I consider him a dear friend. The book absolutely outraged me, and I truly believe he was railroaded and that Eric committed these crimes. Harry's only crime was to shoot Eric. Having previously worked in law enforcement I saw more holes in the State's case and he should never have been convicted and I'm truly convinced had it not been an election year he would not have been. Harry is a good guy as I've taken many years getting to know him and spoken to him by phone many many times. One day he will be exonerated of all charges.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Anyone's Son by Roberta Roesch and Harry De La Roche, Jr
The Harry De La Roche family was, seemingly, the perfect family subsequent door. They were civic-minded churchgoers, and seemed to most of their neighbors to be a warm and loving family. Pictures of Harry, Jr., and his younger brothers Ronnie and Eric playing ball, in Scout uniforms, beside the Christmas tree, could have been taken from their own family albums.

Yet, on a Thanksgiving weekend the entire family was murdered except for Harry, Jr., who was eventually convicted for four first-degree murders and sentenced to life in prison. What went wrong with this family? In this unprecendented first-person account by a young man of the murder of his family, readers will track the deadly symptoms of a family life gone wildly awry.

Was it Harry, Sr.'s own insecurity and insistence on strong discipline? Or his penchant for guns and teaching his boys riflery? Or his wife Mary Jane's diffidence to his authority? Or was it Harry, Jr.'s ungainliness and the cruel teasing of his classmates? Or the vicious hazing at The Citadel that drove him to the brink?

Harry De La Roche tells his story of a troubled teenager with heartbreaking conflicts. The power and drama of his story lie in the common experiences that his family shared with thousands of others blessedly touched by violence. This is a horrifying story of brutal murder, but it is also an extraordinary inside picture of murder's aftermath -- bungles and delay, the loss of key evidence, controversial defense tactics, and crucial psychiatric testimony.

Based on hundreds of hours of in-depth jail interviews substantiated by heavy research and documentation, this is the only book that offers a first-hand account of the De La Roche tragedy. A powerful portrayal of an unforgettable character whom everyone knows from somewhere -- and whom some will find uncomfortably close to home.
