I read Bradsteet's poetry and prose my senior year in high school and then wrote a paper on her life and work. While this book is slow going, it is definitely worth the effort. Bradstreet's poetry is heavily laden with religious overtones and servile references to her social status as a woman. However, the enduring spirit of a woman who could cross the Atlantic for the love of her husband shines through throughout. Bradstreet's fears and courage in dealing with her new life in the wilderness and her love of her family lighten the heavy style which she borrows from contemporary authors. Her works certainly show what time period she is from but the feeings expressed through them are timeless. If you can handle 17th century writing, read this book.
