Product Description:
Being a good parent involves knowing how to provide the correct kind of discipline. Unfortunately, most books on the subject merely supply situation-specific quick fixes, failing to provide an overarching philosophy that will see parents through any situation. Written for parents of children aged 1 to 5 years, 'The Discipline Miracle' presents a comprehensive approach to discipline that allows parents to provide their children with a true sense of security while imposing healthy limits-in short, everything they need to raise happy, well-adjusted kids.

It's worth the read.
We were so desperate when we realized we had a "difficult" child. Our approach was not working, so we bought lots of books. My husband and I both read this book. This provided such a good foundation for discipline and child psychology. It helped me understand bad behavior by breaking it down to the basic needs of a child. We averted so many tantrums by giving hugs instead of lectures, and stopping myself before I lost my temper.
The only thing I didn't like were some the key phrases, like "show me the goods." She uses that phrase over and over. Everytime I read that line and I had to replace it in my head with "show me good behavior"
And she uses a REALLY long phrase that says "you didn't show me respect, restraint, good self-control, behavior......etc" and basically you have to just delete what doesn't apply to that situation, and fill in the blank with the appropriate word. Hard to explain, but you get the hang of it once you read the book.
And I don't like referring to myself as "the boss" but the concept did help me accept that I need to do things in my kids best interest, not what they always want me to do.

I purchased this book because it was listed in a nurse practitioner journal, and I am a nurse practitioner as well. Both my husband and I felt like much of the advice in this book went against our instincts as kind and loving parents. I believe my husband threw the book out after he read something about locking a child in their bedroom if he or she would not stay there. I agree with the reviewer who stated some of the 5 star reviews seem phony.

Author Linda Pearson wrote a dissertation favorable to a fringe psychotherapy called "Attachment Therapy"-- a high confrontation, close-physical contact practice that still promotes the old, out-dated notion of catharsis. Attachment Therapy is associated with a brutal, and highly controlling parenting method that demonizes children they give the bogus diagnosis of "Attachment Disordered."
To my knowledge, Pearson has never denounced Attachment Therapy/Parenting. But the American Psychological Association's Division on Child Maltreatment has. They recommend these practices be investigated as "suspected child abuse."
With this background, it would be particularly important for readers to look closely at this "miracle" book's claim to promote a "clinically proven system" of parenting.

What's up with all these 5-star reviews written on the same day by people who have only reviewed this book? Something smells.

After the author told me to withhold affection when my child misbehaved, I lost interest and faith in where this book was going. This just wasn't for us.
