I was a bit surprised to see that this volume received such poor reviews. I greatly enjoyed it, especially at a time when the rest of both the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Marvel Universe are slipping back into the worst excesses of the mid-1990s.
The author, Dan Slott, views the current state of comics with similar dismay. "World Without A Hulk" is his commentary on the current mismanagement of the Marvel Universe (and the DC Universe, for that matter), and it succeeds brilliantly.
There is nothing new about this use of the character; She-Hulk has been used as a vehicle for metacriticism of comics since John Byrne's run began in 1989. There are differences in Slott's approach, however. She-Hulk is no longer aware that she is a comic book character, for one, and Slott maintains a respect for continuity that borders on the fanatical. Almost all of the gonzo elements of the story are taken from past Marvel books such as Avengers and Fantastic Four, and even a cursory read of the book demonstrates a level of research and care that exceeds even the best of his contemporaries. Slott understands the Marvel Universe better than any other writer at the company today, and it shows.
She-Hulk, Vol. 5 is Dan Slott's call for a return to the "fun" comic books of the past, and his often-times explicit rejection of the poor characterization and shock-value events that have plagued the Avengers, the X-Men, and the rest of the Marvel Universe in recent years. Slott even goes so far as to explain away the more objectionable recent depictions of She-Hulk through the very creative use of an old-school Fantastic Four plot (you'll have to read the book if you want to find out which one).
So don't listen to the people who tell you to avoid this book... it's not only a brilliant comic book for people that are getting sick of comic books, but it's also a really fun, action-packed, witty, and occasionally touching superhero story as well.

Unfortunately, the new, improved She-Hulk series, revamped by Dan Slott, has lost its way - if you've read the last couple of volumes (including this one, "Planet Without a Hulk"), you've noted an unfortunate decline into abject wackiness. Slott has, throughout the series, displayed an appreciation and, perhaps, nostalgia for the weirder, more obscure corners of the Marvel Universe, and most of the time it has worked - not so now, I'm afraid.
"Planet Without a Hulk" finds She-Hulk wrapping up her latest adventure - the troubles with Eros, the titan of love - which ended in her "accidental" marriage to John Jameson, lately re-transformed into the wolf-like Stargod. Upon returning to Earth, Shulkie is drafted into the Hulkbuster unit of SHIELD, where she battles the Abomination, Zzzax, and even the Wendigo (for some reason, at the side of Wolverine), and engages in ad ill-advised love-affair with Tony Stark. However, things turn sour when the Jade Giantess discovers the reason behind the Hulk's disappearance form Earth and has her powers permanently removed by Iron Man. All this, and her law firm in defending The Leader. Also, we learn more about how She-Hulk's gamma-related powers have affected her psyche. And, if that wasn't enough, there are also superpowered dopplegangers from another dimension (I'm not kidding). That's a lot of ground to cover in one volume.
Add to this the fact that this fifth volume of She-Hulk also acts as a wrap-up of most of the series' loose plot points, including: Awesome Andy's recent origin and his resolution of his love for Mallory Book; just where did Pug go, and why (and what will be the fate of his relationship with Jen/Shulkie?); did comic book genius Stu Cicero really get vaporized?; and what is the story with the law firm's new boss, the robot-in-disguise Mr. Zix?
I'm afraid that this comic has just gotten too madcap for its own good. It started with a good premise: She-Hulk hits rock-bottom and starts anew as a lawyer practicing superhuman law, and embarks on a journey of self-discovery along the way. It got a little cosmic (that's fine), we ran into some beloved old foes (Titania, for example), and had some fun. Now, its just gotten way out of hand. Additionally, Rick Burchett supplies the art. Burchett has a distinct style, and he is excellent at what he does; however, I just can't see that his Bruce Timm-meets Disney renditions of characters works in a book that has equal parts comedy and pathos - it's just too cartoony.
I'm desperately hoping that She-Hulk will shortly find its way again. As it is, however, she's but a shadow of her former self.

First of all I am a big fan of She-hulk and this new run was a blessing to me, the very first few books were amazing but as they advance they get worse I have no idea why. WHY MARVEL? This one by far is the worst of them all the artiest are the same as far as I can tell through they are getting a bit sloppy even the mighty Greg Horn really messed up with the faces this time around. Story wise everyone is acting crazy just about everyone is acting out of character. They throw quite a few of jokes but honestly most fail to delver the laughter.
Start off with She-Hulk running around the glob capturing Hulk foes "Abomination" Badly badly out of character. All the way through bunch of no bodies. All that for Ironman to develop a weapon which neutralize the Gamma powered beings and use it on She hulk when she confront him of what he did to Hulk. After that it's all the way down the ally of silly characters silly twists I guess its there humour on the whole comics. But it really had gotten out of hand. I used to read the whole book fully it would grab me. But this one I keep forcing myself on it. Shame on you Marvel. Fans stay away.
