Product Description:
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife’s grave. Then he joined the army.
The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.
Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity’s resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force. Everybody knows that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don’t want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You’ll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You’ll serve two years at the front. And if you survive, you’ll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets.
John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine—and what he will become is far stranger.

I was a bit skeptical about this book, but it turned out to be a fun vacation read. Scalzi managed to win me over despite the fact that military sci-fi is not my favorite sub-genre. The basic premise of *old* people going to war was great. The main character had real depth and his development is what kept me hooked. Some of the secondary characters and the overall cultural milieu were less compelling. Some other characters felt a bit shallow. Perhaps this is because, as you might expect in a war story, many characters don't last very long. The setting felt a bit contrived at times, as if it were only serving to provide character development for the protagonist. (And that development, as I said, was good... I'm just not sure I fully believe in the military/political structure of the Colonial Defense Force.) The romantic sub-plot was solid and surprising and is what ultimately makes me want to read the sequel.

Wow! What a great book. Everything in the book was believable. The science was theory instead of pure fantasy. The characters were solid and the plot unpredictable. I liked it so much, I bought the other two sequels.

A short review from my Kindle. T universe that th author places the characters and story in haspotential for depth in that the Colonial union allows for ethical subjects etc . Unfortunately the story falls short in that characters do not get enough depth and the stroy line reams more like an episode of a series rather than a novel. I give it 3 stars for entertainment value. The 2 stars reduction is for not deepeining out the characters and for lack of depth in the stroyline. Not a Dune.

I'd like to add my own 5 stars to this amazing series that started in Old Man's War. I have to say I didn't expect the story to work it's magic on me the way it had. I thought it would be like the space operas of Peter F. Hamilton (who, btw, also writes great space operas and is one of my long favorites). I was wrong. It was profoundly more human - the plot is truly driven by the characters. While the writing style is relaxed and flows easily and beautifully. I read each of the books in only short periods of time, neither getting confused nor getting tired (because I didn't need to acess the deepest branches of my BrainPal often). Yet despite that, the books provided a rich experience. The twists and plots were not convoluted as to lose the reader, but are nonetheless as exciting and surprising. The characters come alive with their own philosophical dilemmas not far from what we might experience.
I'll definitely miss John Perry and Jane Sagan, but I'll look forward to reading more about Zoe in the upcoming "Zoe's Tale".
This is a great series, and John Scalzi is a great writer. They come highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. A quick read that flowed well and kept me interested. Did not get real technical about the science in the novel. Would recommend to fans of Starship Troopers.
