Product Description:
In a breakthrough book very first published in 1991, the authors address the dynamics in churches that can ensnare people in legalism, guilt, and begrudging service, keeping them from the grace and joy of God's kingdom.Written for both those who feel abused and those who may be causing it, The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse shows how people get hooked into abusive systems, the impact of controlling leadership on a congregation, and how the abused believer can find rest and recovery.

This book is an answer to prayer! Reading this book helped me to realize that I am not crazy! My husband and I have also been able to minister to 12 families by purchasing used copies and sharing them with other families who have come out of the same abusive church - We plan to purchase more, so if you are looking at this book used, buy it now before we get the rest of them! May God bless you with His peace and His healing as you read through this book!

This book was recommended to me by a pastor who thought I would benefit from reflecting on the perspectives presented. I found the insights could be disturbing yet very important to read. The author's presentation of this material was honest and compassionate; investing themselves not only in exposing distructive religious interpretations, but in providing good counsel and constructive problem-solving. If you have ever found yourself questioning religious authority and would benefit from possible validation---read this book. You may uncover the root of your discomfort.

What a great book. The authors go to great lengths to describe a problem that many believers experience. Buy this book, and it will open your eyes to what the Holy Spirit has been speaking to you for years. You'll feel refreshed, and alot will make sense. If you are in a place that is abusing you, and you feel defeated, accused, and lost your joy in the Lord, this book will help you identify the problem, address it, and allow you to understand God in a whole new way, as a God of love and mercy.
We were kicked out of our church for not "submitting" to the pastor. After reading this book, it gives us a clear picture of what true spiritual authority looks like. We're in a place now that gives life, not more bondage. This book was like a cold drink of water.

This book opens your eyes to the "soft & manipulative" abuse that is placed upon unaware individuals who are easily intimidated by others of authority within the church structure. It enforces the knowledge that ultimate authority is from Christ and not any human being on this planet. It also encourages you to voice your opinions of things which are taught or required of you from "authoritive" figures which do not align with Scripture. A good read and more than that, very enlightening.

I'll give the authors credit for bringing the problems to the surface, and saying them the way it is. But it never addresses the problem of WHY, why it happened in the very first place? Many of these abusive individuals are dedicated people in their beliefs, and they committed their lives to it wholeheartedly. To say that these people are just burnt-out is too simple and naive. The god christianity preached promised in Proverbs 3:6
"In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.", and likewise in I Peter 5:7, Phillippians 4:7, Psalm 91 and many others. These are god's promises to protect his people, not something that "may happen" or "sometimes happen". And as depicted in this book, the promise has fallen short. Then, could it be said that something is fundamentally wrong in the belief itself? Such as, it's not true? :) To educate yourself further, I recommend Dan Barker's Losing Faith in Faith.
