Product Description:
In the fourth and final novel of Mercedes Lackey's Dragon Jousters series, Kiron, the man who had once been a dragon-boy called Vetch, has united the dragon riders and managed to rid their world of both war and magical domination. But are the evil Magi really gone for good? As Kiron tries to build a new civilization at the site of an abandoned cliff dweller's city, called Aerie, conflicts arise, and he soon realizes there is a vast conspiracy at work, which includes individuals who have infiltrated every walk of life-even his own family. Once the heads of the Magi, these conspirators are determined to regain their sinister control.

The opening half has an excellent plot, but the characters I grew so fond off seem to have become retarded.
The second half returns the characters to their previous mental status but the plot is downright silly.
Bit's and pieces of it are excellent, but the overall is a real mess.

Characters that are easy to love and follow include people as well as the dragons. This is an excellent story and ties the series together well.

Speaking as someone who loved the very first three books, I was hugely disappointed. This book is definitely full of typos and grammatical mishaps. (She can't even keep track of dragon colors and names, though that's been true since book two.) Beyond that, the plot is disjointed, meandering, and frankly unnecessary.
I would have to disagree with the reviewer who said book three begged for continuation. I loved the ending of Sanctuary, and assumed that the series would end there. While I never object to sequels that take the world and the characters further than before, this book does not do that.
The wonderful sense of urgency and development that carried through the very first three books just wasn't there. Some of my favorite characters (notably Aket-ten) behaved in ways that just did not seem consistent with their actions in other books. All in all, I would have been perfectly fine with a Dragon Jousters trilogy.

Mercedes Lackey is a master story teller who can keep the reader turning pages and there is a certain sense of completion in this conclusion of Kiron's tale. While there are wonderful elements in this fantasy, such as his reunion with his mother and his quest in the deep desert, what is being worked out is leftover themes from the previous books. The tight focus on Kiron's struggles is no longer possible, because in this book he has "made it" and the reader feels less of a sense of urgency as a result.
This is an optional book. The series started by Joust, continued in Alta and last seen in Sanctuary came to a fully satisfactory conclusion in that last book. If you decide to skip this one, you won't miss anything critical. But if you read Aerie, you'll have a good time.

I really enjoyed this book, since it not only continued the story of people I like, but it also provided information I'd been curious about, i.e., the fate of Kiron's mother and more information about the people who had enslaved Tia in the past. The types of magic used were interesting, as was the information about the gods. I've been pleased each time Lackey has written another in this series, as I'd thought the series was complete as it was. I wish she'd write another now, this time with continuations in the lives of the other dragon jousters, as well as the central characters.
