Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
In 1961, after the United States had acquired a total of fifteen minutes of spaceflight experience, President John F. Kennedy announced his plans for landing a man on the moon by 1970. The space race had begun. In 1962, after a strenuous competition, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation of Bethpage, Long Island, had won the contract to build the lunar module—the spacecraft that would take Americans to the moon. This was the first, and the only, vehicle designed to take humans from one world to another. Although much has been written about the very first men to set foot on the moon, those very first hesitant steps would not have been possible without the efforts of the designers and technicians assigned to Project Apollo. Building Moonships: The Grumman Lunar Module tells the story of the people who built and tested the lunar modules that were deployed on missions as well as the modules that never saw the light of day. This is the very first publication to chronicle the visual history of the design, construction, and launch of the lunar module—one of the most historic machines in all of human history.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A beautifull insight
It's a feast to read an view this book. What a large amount of never seen pictures. This book is a must-have for every Apollo fan. I wish all books surprise this much.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - My dad worked on the LM at Grumman ....
... and I bought this book hoping that maybe I could find him in one of the photos. I DID! He died when I was young, so I don't know much about his work, but I remember seeing pics of him coming out of the LM and him bringing me home bits of the gold foil they used for the skin. Great book.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - LEM
This is a good pictorial history of the development of an amazing flying machine. I would have liked more text as the only writing is captions on each photo, some of which have not been well edited. If you want to know more about the technical side of Apollo read 'Apollo' by Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - When Life throws you a LEM-mon...
This is a great book for anyone looking for a general knowledge about the Lunar Excavation Module. Not a whole lot of descriptions or explanations but tons of incredible photos that take you through every step of the LEM's development.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Ironworks' Triumph.
This relatively small book packs within it's pages a wealth of images of one of the twentieth century's masterpieces of aerospace egineeering: The Grumman Lunar Module, built at the Bethpage 'Ironworks' that saw the birth of generations of the US Navy's most capable aircraft, and, this 'funny looking spider'.

The bulk of the book consists of photos, drawings and plans of thee Lunar Module from initial conception to the final moon landing and those machines now in museums. Besides the machines themselves, many of the photos show the men and women who created, tested and prepared the LM's. It may just be me, but I believe that the dedication and commitment of each of them can be seen in these photographs.

In conclusion, a book of value to any one with even a passing interest in the space program and a fine tribute to the men and women of Grumman and the Apollo program.
