Product Description:
Of all the dukes in England, Jered Marcus Benton, the Duke of Bradford, was the wealthiest, most handsome -- and most arrogant. And of all London's ladies, he wanted the tender obedience of only one -- Caroline Richmond.
She was a ravishing beauty from Boston, with a mysterious past and a fiery spirit. Drawn to the powerful duke, undeterred by his presumptuous airs, Caroline was determined to win his lasting love. But Bradford would bend to no woman -- until a deadly intrigue drew them enticingly close. Now, united against a common enemy, they would discover the power of the magnificent attraction that brought them together...a desire born in danger, but destined to flame into love!

I personally really like this book. The Hero in the book is different from most of Julie's other heroes, but I still liked him. He has trust issues, but does work through them and change in the end. The main female character does not lose her gumption and become a wet noodle, she just learns to accept the man as he is, but still strive to make him better. I thought this book was good, but not the best. In many of the other novels (The Bride, The Wedding, Ransom, Saving Grace) I wanted to read them again after I put them down, with this book I will probably read it again but not until subsequent summer.

I don't understand other reviews not liking this book. In fact it IS one of my favorite Garwood books. Caroline is strong, sassy and sweet. She loves and wants to break this arrogant man, because she knows the love he is capable of. That's where the "battle" lies. This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Because they are both strong willed, some of the dialogue between them is hillarious which makes the romance between them even better you can just feel it! Enjoy the read.

When she was just a child, Caroline Richmond was sent from her home in London to live with family in the colony of Boston. For 14 years, Caroline was nurtured in the home of her aunt and uncle, never knowing why her father sent her away. Finally, all those years later, Caroline returns to London to take her rightful place at her father's side.
Jered Marcus Benton, the Duke of Bradford, is not a man who succumbs to the charms of just any woman. However, from the moment he meets Caroline he is taken with her. He vows then and there that she will be here. What he doesn't realize is that he will not only have to tame her indomitable spirit and cow her stubborn streak to make her his wife, but he'll have to do the same things to himself.
Rebellious Desire is an older Julie Garwood romance, published originally in 1986. It shows. This story doesn't have the depth or complexity of her later stories, and there is a lot more plot summary than actual action. Also, the characters aren't written as fully as I've come to expect from her, so it was difficult to gain an attachment to them. This book started off strong, and I was hoping for a more complete romance, but alas I was disappointed. I would actually give this story 2 1/2 stars, but I know what Garwood is capable of, so I'll round up. If this is your very first Julie Garwood story, do yourself a favor and pick up Honor's Splendour or the Bride instead. You'll be happier for it.

This story was slow, uninspiring, and hardly sensuous, desirous, or entertaining. The characters are lifeless and the story, boring. Don't waste your time. If you want truly wonderful historical fiction novels, go to Judith McNaught. Any of her historical fiction novels are worlds better than this one.
