A keeper, I reread this book about every two years and love it. It's one of those books that becomes an old friend. Thought of fondly and visited often.

Very interesting reading the latest reviews of this book, and for the most part I must disagree. I think part of the problem for some peope, and I agree with a poster a few reviews down, is that most authors explain too much to the reader too soon. Not the case with this book, thankfully.
This is one of my all time favorite reads. I very first read it the year it was published in 1994, and have read it several times since. My old copy was so beat up, I recently bought a new one.
The pace of the book in my opinion is not slow at all. It is descriptive, sets the mood. When I read this book, I feel like I am right there with Joelle and Luke, in the middle of the vast Canadian wilderness which is the setting for this book.
One of my criteria when I buy a book is that there must be paragraphs througout with NO dialogue. If it's just dialogue after dialogue, there is not enough substance and I put the book back on the shelf. This book has a wonderful balance of dialogue, mystery, suspense, action, mood-setting descriptions, emotional depth, romance, and of course fantasy.
(I must mention here that Susan Krinard's later books following the werewolves were not as interesting to me, ie. "Touch of the Wolf" etc. Where the "Prince of Wolves" is filled from cover to cover with wonderfully detailed settings and character development, her subsequent books were more focused dialogue and cheesy romance.)
The "jumping around" that occurs is not without purpose. It is simply switching point-of-view between the hero and heroine. Not enough authors do this as far as I'm concerned. It is refreshing that the author allows the reader to see both sides of the story rather than only from the point of view of the female. In this case, the hero is far too deep a character to not let his voice be heard. Transitions of this nature can be confusing, but not in this book. Susan Krinard pulls it off beautifully.
Joelle, or Joey as she is most commonly called, is a complex character. She knows what she wants and is determined to get it, and yet there is a vulnerable side to her.
Luke is a very strong, sensual, mysterious, emotionally complex character.
I absolutely love both of these well developed charatcers. At times, their emotion is mine. This is one of the rare books where I actually get the occasional lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. At other times, a smile on my face. Sometimes all three together!
The conflict continues for most of the book, although there are small resolutions throughout. One reason I feel this book is so well written is that there is more than one conflict. Indeed this book covers them all. Man against man. Man against nature. And man against self.
And while I often skip love scenes because they are just poorly written with phrases such as "Don't be afraid my dearest darling!", yack lol.. in "Prince of Wolves" these scenes are riveting, sensual, powerful, and add rather than detract from the story.
If you enjoy nature, books with substance, emtional depth, a complex stroy line, fantasy romance, and not just "he said she said", this is the book for you.

I opened this one, having read in several places that it's one of her best. It's not. It plods along so slowly that I seriously considered tossing it several times. This is almost more a story about the Canadian wilderness than the two lovers. They rehashed the same territory in their relationship repeatedly. Joey's major goal was finding her parents. She does, with Luke's help, and then a few tears and quiet moments, and it's over. She's all better, time to move on. So unrealistic emotionally. Also there were a number of times that events seemed to happen only to present a situation for something else (the bear, for example) -- deux ex machina is not a good writing choice. Luke was compelling at times, but it took over half the book to get him there; for the longest time, he was just a guy with a chip on his shoulder. Cut the book in half, and you may have something. I'd skip it. BTW, Krinard has indicated that this contemporary work is connected to her historical books; but there's no explanation as to why these loup-garous are more wolflike than their ancestors. Weird. 2.5 stars.

I find myself confused after reading some of the extrememly negative reviews of this book.
I read a TON of books, particularly romance (hey, you haven't lived 'til you've lived vicariously!) and I found Prince of Wolves to be extremely refreshing. The descriptions of the landscape were lush and vivid, and the romance was allowed to develop gradually enough so that it didn't seem feigned or unbearably cheesy. I found the character development to be strong, and any ambiguity of motives was clearly resolved in due time. Many authors make the mistake of making things too obvious, in my opinion, which robs a romance of its humanity. After all, people are nothing if not complicated, and coming to know a character gradually keeps me, at least, from becoming bored. Yes, there is a very sexual aspect to this book, but it really is secondary to the emotional content, and it's easy enough to skim over those parts if you don't like it.
I read this book in two sittings, and can't wait to read more from Krinard. If you like supernatural romance, and you crave strong viusals and real characters, I completely recommend this book!

Seriously, this book is dull it just goes on and on about nothing. There is some major fear or problem that is alluded to if the characters were to get together romantically, but it is never really explained. I got a little over half way through and just couldn't waste any more time on this. I've never abandoned a book and most romances take me no longer than a day to finish, but after 2.5 weeks I just couldn't force myself to read anymore. If you like paranormal try vampires with Christine Feehan - those are all awesome books.
