I admit that I didn't really look forward to this book after reading all the mixed reviews but once I started, I thought it was very good. The characters were a little confusing at first, but it was fast paced and certainly wasn't boring. I was pleasantly surprised, especially after being disappointed with Through a Crimson Veil and the never-ending almost-sex scenes. I enjoyed the different characters and I liked Tiber, was surprised by Jaise, and felt sorry for Lath. Claudia was likable, although I thought she was pretty dense to not realize that Tiber needed blood after his very first serious injury. She must not be reading the same vamp books I've been reading.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and it's characters.

There are some good points in the book, but there are bad points as well.
I liked Tiber, however I think we could have used more background on him. You don't get his whole story, so you don't really understand why he does what he does. However, a strong vamp, he does what is necessary - for Claudia, Holly and himself. What he had to do in a part of this novel was really sad - a parent shouldn't have to do what he had to do. I really felt for him.
As for Claudia, her hatred for vampires wasn't clarified so you didn't understand her feelings, especially the distrust. It kept coming back to what she learned in the academy. While you do get some background on her, you don't get a whole lot, nor do you get a straight, full story on how she fell for a demon, not knowing what he was and had a baby. The idea of her being only 15 at the time had me rather frightened: my daughter is seven and I can't imagine what life would be like at the age of 15 and finding out you're pregnant, regardless of the life you've had. Couldn't have been easy. But there isn't enough for the ready to fully comprehend what's going on in that department. I do, however, have to give Claudia kudos; she raised her daughter alone, and fought with everything she has inside to give her daughter a better life.
The plot was good, could have used a little more work. There is a couple of parts in the story that I'm really not happy with - rape is rape, no matter how or who, and I don't like reading the by-play of the entire scene. Saying the victim was raped is one thing, but to be there with Claudia while it's happening? While she's screaming no but her body says yes? Vishtau or not, I didn't like it, and I hope to never read something like that again. I'd have liked to take a knife to Lath myself, no doubt about that.
And it's because of those exact scenes that I can't give the novel a better rating than 3 stars. Sorry, Ms. Jewel! A little too `dark' for my taste.

This book is about a young woman, Claudine (Claudette? Sorry her name escapes me) who at 25 is a cop, a mother of a 10 year old daughter and lives in a world where vampires and werewolves are commonplace. While investigating a crime scene she becomes entangled with a demon who brings her to his world. Soon she discovers her daughter has been kidnapped by the demons as well because Claudia (I think that's the name) is able to "open the portal" between the worlds. Why her and how do the demons know, anyway? Don't ask me. Fortunately for her she has very big breasts, huge brown eyes and a gorgeous, ancient vampire is on her side and helps her slay the demons. Some girls have all the luck.
Though this book didn't grab me with its wit or imaginative plot it sure as heck managed to annoy me. The dialogue is awful, the characters very substandard and the plot sketchy and difficult to follow. The heroine's daughter has been kidnapped but I felt nothing as there's very little in the way of character development and Claudine is far too busy lusting over gorgeous demons (who woo her with mind tricks) and vampires to dwell on the fact that her daughter may be suffering atrocities (after all, she is being held by lusty demons).
This books worse sin, however, is the fact that it's boring. Most of the story features the vampire and the forgettable heroine running for their lives from demons, in between pauses to reflect on how beautiful they think each other are. It just plods on and on. Not at all recommended unless you're stuck in a room with people you wish to avoid and only have this book as a means to escape them . . .

I put off reading the series after the third book for two years because of the bad reviews. I wish I hadn't because this one was pretty good. It had a plot unlike the second book that was two people running around. I thought the action was fine. The only mistake was one of the Demons goes back to LA, but it really doesn't explain how he could get back to Orcus. The main character has a lot of growth. She's always been a fighter and even when she wants to give up, she can't. Even when she's raped, she can get over it because she is a fighter with a very violent upbringing. The part where she meets up with her baby's daddy is somewhat disjointed.

Wow. i am confused as to why their are so many bad reviews. this is one of the best books in the series so far and i am not even finnished with it! i like it so much i came down to the pc to search and see what else this author has written and if she has done anymore of this series.
yes it is a bit confusing in the beginning. most crazy plots take a few pages to get everything in line most times.
i guess this is a love it or hate it book and i am a reader of a lot of books and consider myself a pretty good judge on what is good and what is bad.
I would recomend it
a keeper!! i hope more is written about the deamons in detail this opened up a whole new exciting world to explore.
