I am conflicted with my review since overall I liked the book, but if I really examine it closely - it was definitely fluff. True, that I shouldn't have expected Dostoevsky with a picture of a partially dressed blond on the cover, but I have learned a long time ago not to judge a book by its cover and all the great reviews made me pick it up. The story vaguely reminds me of the X-Men plot line with Genie/Tarzan additions, but as fairy tales go - it was an entertaining read.
The main aspects of the book that I really liked were:
1. Dela was a likable character. She is strong, independent, self reliant, well educated and can hold her own in bad situations.
2. The supporting characters were mostly well picked and each had their own interesting personality, which I think enriched the book.
3. The mystery around the plot was well constructed and wasn't obvious, hence it made me want to read to the end.
Now as to the negative:
1. I'm not a big fan of "initial-hate-turned-to-romance-in-two-days" kind of story. I like when authors either stretch it out over multiple books or skip a couple of months here and there, so the passion actually makes sense. Here, the main characters started talking about kids on day three all the while not believing their true fortune!
2. Not giving away any major spoilers, Hari was a slave for 2000 years and when he wasn't asked to fight for his masters he was made to pleasure his mistresses. There was much emphasis on cultural aspects and historical events that Hari saw, but shouldn't he have met at least one homosexual master in all that time? Since the author tried to add historical data to emphasize the darker sides of human nature and all that Hari went, she should've made it at least a little more believable and looked up the preferences of people in a given time period.
3. The resolution to the plot was very thin and in my opinion lacked culmination factors. I found the ending lacking since I was expecting something more based on the exciting buildup throughout the book. The bad guys were not very believable in their badness and were very easily overcome without a single loss to the good side. Yet again, not very believable in my opinion.
I might read the subsequent book in the series, mostly because I liked Artur's character and I think the second book is based on him, but this book did not hook me like the work of J.R. Ward did for example. There are things missing from making it a hit, although overall it's a somewhat entertaining read.

With Tiger Eye Marjorie M Liu created a new and exciting series filled with shapeshifters, paranormal talented people and thrilling adventure. Dela finds herself in a situation where she buys a wooden box from an old lady and who would have guessed this would put her whole world upside down? Of course Dela opens the box and there he is, Hari, all rippled muscles, golden skin and very cold eyes.
If there is one thing that I felt from the very very first pages was the imagination of the author that made me walk in the early morning sun of Beijing, feel the numbness in Hari as Dela is a strong and passionate woman. From the moment they meet there is something simmering between them that concocts vivid pictures of passion and results in spicy dialogue. Hari has 2000 years of service to cruel masters and is now experiencing the power of a woman's heart and her unselfish behavior is throwing him off balance big time.
Although Hari is distrustful at very first about everything involving his emotions and Dela, they don't struggle with it much, they adept to it and it grows fast into something deep and unbreakable. It is not as much for the acceptance of love that is a struggle but the circumstances that lead them into situations which makes them question the very survival of their love. The curse and it's master knock on their door very early on in the story and then you have other events which are tied up with the talent of Dela that all blend in together and give a novel that is pleasantly paced and introduces the reader to many men who beg for their own story to be told.
The cadence of words that lures me into the world of Marjorie M Liu is filled with colorful settings, strong developed characters and interesting chemistry between the good and evil that keeps me interested. At the ending the author masterfully leads the reader to a climax that had my eyes fill up for a moment or two.
With style and grace Marjorie M Liu gives us a tale of true romance and keeps me looking out for more of her Dirk and Steele series!!

Overlook the cheesy cover. This book (and the others in the Dirk & Steele series) is a compelling blend of 1 part romance, and 2 parts paranormal action.

The book is about a group of people with paranormal abilities who all work for a secret "agency". In this story, the heroine has an affinity to metal (which is not very seriously exploited) and meets a shape shifter who has lost the ability to shape-shift along with some other issues which have been explained in detail by other reviewers. As a start to the series the book is good since it introduces a range of characters who will presumably be recurring. This slows down the story somewhat but dialogue is fairly rapid and holds attention.
The downside is the rather dramatic descriptive style when dealing with the hero. And did anyone find the oral sex between the heroine and the tiger (the hero's alter ego) disturbing? I'm all for steamy sex scenes but with an animal? It seemed rather perverted to me. Thankfully he turns back into a human at the point of consummation or it would have been just too weird.
I may try the subsequent book but if the animal/human motif continues thats it for me.
