Product Description:
What if the man you loved was a vampire? How would you find the courage to embrace the darkness? Sarah Ashton, Lady Clevancy, is sure she is a very ordinary person in a very ordinary Regency England. Her life is invaded by a mysterious stranger, the long lost owner of the ruined abbey adjacent to her ancestral lands now accused of serial murder. She should be appalled, rather than fascinated. But she finds herself saving the devil himself from danger, and falling in love in the process. Her love will lead her across Europe, to the edge of eternity.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - One great read
All I can say is : I LOVE THIS BOOK, I LOVE THIS BOOK, I LOVE THIS BOOK !!!
After I started to read the beginning and finally got into it, I wasn't able to put it down anymore. It was one gripping read. I was spellbound. You will fall in love with the 2 main characters and you will keep thinking about them long after you finished the book.
Now I am hooked on Susan Squires books. I just finished reading the newest one( One With The Shadows )and it was just is great.
I can't wait for the subsequent one to come out.
I highly recommend this author.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Wow..
First off, I completely agree with the person who wrote a review right before mine. Two hours of my life I will NEVER get back, indeed. The story DID have potential to be good, but the author had horrible character development in the very first half of the book to allow me enjoy the characters. I will admit the ending was good, I liked the way it turned out.. But honestly, the very first 200 pages were brutal. I couldn't quite figure out how a love relationship could development with the heros when there was nothing in the very first half of the book to allow them to really interact! I don't recommend this as a very first vampire romance novel, try another one of her books because most of them are fairly written. I expected more from Susan Squires having read 'The Companion' before 'Sacrament'.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Another very interesting vampire Regency from Susan Squires
I've read "The Companion", "The Burning" and "The Hunger" by Susan Squires, three books set in the Regency period about vampires that feature some of the same characters. I bought "Sacrament", thinking it was from a different series as it had a different publisher, but it in fact uses the same setting as her other books. As in those books, The Companion is a parasite that lives in the blood and gives the human host some unusual characteristics - the ability to heal, excessive strength and long lifespan.

There is a dedication at the beginning of this book that mentions Georgette Heyer. Now if a keen reader of Heyer read this book expecting something similar they'd get rather a shock - although set in the Regency period the whole tone of this book is completely different. Of course a vampire book is, of necessity, not strictly historical but I did find myself irritated by one or two historical anachronisms - for example, our heroine is Lady Clevancy; who is her father? Presumably the Earl of Clevancy, but then she would be Lady Sarah, not Lady Clevancy; and when her father died, where was his heir, and we know she hasn't been married before - there's a lack of accuracy in English titles here. There are also some Americanisms in speech ("drug" for the past participle "dragged") and "gotten" and other common errors. But I liked the setting and particularly the detail of things like a journey on a mail coach from London to Bath (which took several days, unlike many authors' journeys from London to Gretna Green in 3 hours!) and on the food available in a house around Christmas time when foraging and travelling around Europe.

Our hero, Julien Davinoff, is a vampire and an old one at that - there's a lovely little scene where he discusses events in history that he's witnessed and people he knew - there are lots of famous names mentioned and historical allusions which are great fun. We don't actually find out a great deal about him personally until halfway through the book - before that point he's just a baddie who is laying claim to Sarah, Lady Clevancy's property and against whom she is fighting. Her friend Corina is trying to fascinate Mr Davinoff and it is slowly revealed to us that Corina isn't all that good news and that she persuaded Sarah into an indiscretion many years ago. Susan Squires' books seem to have rather nasty female characters in them who torture our heroes - Davinoff gets off more lightly than some in this book but he still has a bad time. But Sarah shows herself to be a brave heroine - until she is given the offer of a lifetime when her courage fails. She soon regrets it and has to set out on a quest to be given another chance - but is it too late.

This is a very enjoyable book with great settings in Bath, Vienna and Transylvania as well as different characters, some of whom are historical (we meet William Wilberforce, for example). The story is interesting and the characters are engaging, as is the author's take on history (we meet the inspiration for Satan in Dante's Paradise Lost) and the overall theme that love is the only thing that can make life worthwhile is one that probably a lot of us feel sympathy with. It's a good read and a great introduction to Susan Squires' Companion novels.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - I want a Companion..............
I read The Companion very first and loved it, so I immediately bought Sacrament. I know several people have given this book bad reviews, but I disagree. A few readers couldn't figure out when and how Sarah and Julien fell in love. I guess they didn't see the subtle signs, Julien not taking Sarah's land, Sarah thinking about him constantly, etc. After all this story takes place in a different time. Women had a different place in society and weren't outspoken about their feelings. Some readers thought the story was too drawn out. I, on the other hand, like my characters fleshed out and the exotic locales described in detail. It's true, there was not a lot of info about "The Companion." But I read the second book first, so I already knew some details that were omitted from this story. As to the friendship between Corina and Sarah, I believe Sarah was a friend more out of pity than real friendship. She knew what Corina had suffered as a child. I also think she was afraid if she ended the friendship, Corina would reveal what she knew about her.
I read this book very quickly and enjoyed it - give it a chance. I am eagerly waiting for The Hunger to come out in October.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - I couldn't put this book down!!! A great story!
I know alot of reviews said that this book is not their cup of tea or this book is too graphic or whatever ...I truly enjoyed this book. This is my very first Susan Squires book and it won't be my last. This story is about Sarah (heroine) and Julien (vampire hero) Sarah finds out that her neighbor Julien is trying to take her precious estate from her. But why would a wealthy man like Julien want Sarah's property that is just scrapping by to make ends meet? Her deeds to the land are missing and she suspects that it was Julien who stole it. She does some investagating to try and find something that says she owns the property.....Mean while Sarah's friend (corina) the talk of England sets her sights on Julien, but Julien isn't interested in Corina and she exacts her revenge on him for that . At very first Julien is cold toward Sarah but he finds himself drawn to her...because of her heart, her smarts and her naivety. This story is worth reading all the way through. It's not like your ordinary romance novel. It has alot of twists and turns and you find yourself not being able to put it down! I couln't anyway. I highly reccomend this book. I am going to look for Susan Squires other books as well.
