The universe of Susan Grant's story is well populated, economically and politically complex (compared to most romantic SF). The fighter environment and setting details have a refreshingly authentic feeling. (yeah!). At bottom this is a story about the rebel son of an interstellar dynasty having to motivate change in an historically passivist society as they face a terrorist cult.
I won't summarize the story in my remarks, as that is provided elsewhere in these pages. I'll just say that there is something missing about this story that keeps it from being absolutely great.
Since it involves Earth's very first encounter with space aliens, that part of the story wasn't as engaging as it could have been. I mean, we could have been inside the Situation Room, for example, as Earth's political leaders dealt with this momentous news, and we just weren't treated to some inside details of this event. After the aliens arrive, and Jas sees Rom on TV, the story went on for a long time while Jas traveled, and you were waiting for Jas and Rom to hook up again - it just dragged in those chapters. And the chief antagonist, the villian, was sort of a cartoon character. I didn't get a real good sense of his motivations. He could have been a rounder character. For me there was also an unrealistic part where Jas, a fighter pilot, makes a huge leap into successfully piloting an interstellar spaceship (in a new language) in a short interval of time (like minutes).
The romance, for me, was lacking a heat. A paraphrase of the prose - he then took her to new heights, unimaginanble, while she quivered with delight. I wanted a little bit more sensual detail. But that's just me.
The story really takes off as Rom comes to terms with his leadership responsibilities, and his father comes on stage. The political conflict in the 11 thousand year old dynasty is riveting, and reminiscent of Dune. Rom being drawn back into the basic conflict introduces the very first real sense of conflict in the romantic story with Jas. It is in these chapters where the book shines.
At bottom, I think the story is marred by confusing two things, the aliens coming to Earth for the very first time - an event which seems to swallow the very first half of the book, and the approaching interstellar war, with Rom being a key player in moving his people to fighting action. The romance has to span this huge gap, Earth being primitive compared to the Vath. Fortunately, in the end, you ARE convinced that these two people are meant for each other, and that Jas does bring a crucial element into Rom's life. In that regard, the closing moments of the book, and the interaction of Rom with the children, are really cool.

it was boring the story line had so much potential but in the end it disappointed me and i cant understand anybody liking such a dull story. the lovemaking left much to be desired. the story itself was unimaginative enough. come on these people are from a different world and they come and visit earth and there are no differences between them and average earthlings??? dont waste your money even if its a cent. borrrow it from some library!!

An excellent book, it should be on everyone's bookshelf. I cried a bit in the end => READ IT! Crown Prince Rom went against his father's wishes and fought the rising evil in the galaxy, with his younger brother. But his brother died and he was left unconscious. He awoke to a vision an angel to his thinking. A woman with grey hair, unheard of, she made him wake up but after sharing a kiss she disappeared. He knew she was real for he felt her and she shot at him. He vowed that he would find her again. Captured by enemy forces she gave him the courage he needed to fight and kill his enemy. He was a hero. Well no actually his family disowned him after the war. Why well you have to read the book.
The Angel Jasmine Hamilton, on the other hand, a pilot in the Air Force was shot down in the desert of Saudi Arabia. She landed in a world that couldn't be real. Jasmine after being saved could not forget the man she met and ever since that time she always felt as if something was missing in her life. She knew that something special had happened to her in the desert...
Years later earth has discovered that they are not alone in the universe. Cool! Rom & Jas meet again and together go on a great adventure of love and discovery. This book might sound a bit well different to you, but it's great. I've only told you a little piece of the story you have to read it!

This is a great romance and a great science fiction story. The universe beyond earth as described by the author is imaginative and fascinating. I love the premise of an adventerous woman seeking passage on the very first space vessel to have contact with earth. The characters in the book are mature adults (no lame empaths or mystical healing heroines in this sci fi story) who are able to work out their problems by discussing them. The heroine is intelligent, thoughtful, and can rescue herself. And the hero is everything a romance reader wants in a hero - commanding, gentle, respectful, and hot. This is a fascinating, fun-filled adventure - a very satisfying read. I easily rate this book 5 stars. It is part of my keeper collection! If you like sci fi romance, don't pass this gem up.
