Product Description:
Properly researched and intelligently deployed, scenario planning is today’s most powerful tool for understanding and preparing for an uncertain future. Yet it remains a niche approach, poorly understood by leaders at large. To bring it into the strategy mainstream, leaders need advice on how to turn concepts (scenarios) into actions (strategy).
Scenarios for Success delivers a unique and coherent account of the state of the scenario planning art. It is aimed particularly at those trying to implement its findings. Striking a balance between theory and practice, the contributors show how and why the core techniques of scenario thinking have endured and are still valuable, while bringing new tools and processes that keep scenario planning in touch with modern realities.

Well, in my view, you just can't spend too much time thinking about strategic scenarios when you're a leader. Scenarios for Sucess is a great new book that will help you in that area. It includes work from a variety of competent, serious authors in the area of professional foresight. The quality of the essays range from good to great. For the more experience strategic thinker, this is a wonderful reference volume I plan on consulting for some time.

The future seen by an executive or decision maker is inherently uncertain, especially since there are many players as well as natural systems that conspire to increase the uncertainty. Three responses are:1. rely on dumb luck 2. have faith that the current business, visionary, tradition , or country has "got it right", or 3. to raise your game and that of your company to see the opportunities in strategic uncertainty.
This book is a great resource for the last approach since it reveals the thinking tools and techniques used by some of the most experienced people in the field who have spent their careers working with companies and governments to raise their strategic and institutional game.
It clearly debunks the myth that scenarios are "just random stories" by showing how to think systematically, institutionally and creatively about futures, and how to take effective institutional action in the present to succeed in those futures.
There is a huge amount of distilled wisdom in this book, with real world examples of how the approaches have been applied. Despite being familiar with the field I found it both effectively captured and developed the state of the art.
This is a book for the desk top , not the bookshelf!
